Recently received this TCB New S40 Type 1 WW2 Jacket. It was slightly large for me out of the box. Had to shrink it down to my perfect fit via a 40 degrees machine wash + dryer cycle 😬 #type1jacket #ww2jacket #denimjacket

This jacket is a great example of why Japanese denim is so revered among us denim collectors. This Studio D’Artsian denim jacket is woven on Toyota GL3 power looms creating a very slubby texture which I’m a huge fan of. It is cut in a hybrid type 2 / chore coat style.

The jacket starts off as an Ecru denim and then hand-dyed using an ancient 1300 year old Amami Dorozome (mud-dyeing) technique from Amami Oshima Island in Japan. It is initially dyed with native Techi/plum trees and finally dipped in iron-rich mud, specific to the island, for a unique earthy brown tone.

Admittedly, this jacket isn’t for everyone as it’s a very niche process that not many people care for. Why not just purchase a brown jacket?! But that’s not the Japanese way! 😀 It’s a nice change and variation from a typical Indigo dyed denim I’d say.

I’ve been told it’s supposed to fade to a lighter brown over time with some unique fades.
