I’m still pinching myself that I had the privilege of performing my first Winterreise in a properly authentic Schubertiade Salon yesterday. Here’s one of my favourite songs from the cycle, which perfectly encapsulates the devastating beauty of this incredible music. Bravo @williamdsearle, you were a true joy to work with!

Beverley came to Bechstein! 🚂 🎹 Our magnificent musicians presented two amazing concerts in London’s @bechsteinhall this week. From sonatas by James MacMillan and Franz Schubert, to songs by Grace Williams, Rebecca Clarke, @cherylhoad and more - as well as two song cycles by Benjamin Britten to mark the 50th anniversary of his death - these rush-hour concerts packed a punch. Elegance, brutal drama, tearjerking beauty… just a standard New Paths event! Thank you to our dream team @harriet_burns_ @leo.popplewell @martafontanals @violas_and_barbells, and our own Artistic Director @libbyburgesspiano who curated these programmes and played every piece in both concerts! 🙌

Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was wonderful to be together in the big smoke. 🌃

Next up: our Autumn Festival in Beverley, beginning in under two weeks! 🍂

We’ve arrived in London for the start of our 10th birthday mini-tour. What a city! Home to so many of our festival artists, it’s the natural place for New Paths Collective to kick things off.

Join us at Bechstein Hall today (Tue 8th Sep) and Thursday (10th Sep) for a pair of rush hour concerts, which combine Britten song cycles with major instrumental sonatas.

Tickets (£20) available from Bechstein Hall. We can’t wait to see you there at 6pm tonight and Thursday.

From Yorkshire to London with love 🧡

Harriet Burns (soprano)
Leo Popplewell (cello)
Libby Burgess (piano)
feat. Britten’s ‘On This Island’ and Sir Jame MacMillan’s haunting Cello Sonata No 1.

A Charm of Lullabies | Thu 10 Sep, 6pm
Marta Fontanals-Simmons (mezzo-soprano)
Jane Atkins (viola)
Libby Burgess (piano)
feat. Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata and ‘A Charm of Lullabies’ by Britten

🔜 The week of our Bechstein Hall concerts is nearly here. Join us in Marylebone on Tuesday (8th) and Thursday (10th) for these rush-hour recitals. Each pairs a song cycle by Britten with a major instrumental sonata.

On Tuesday, hear soprano Harriet Burns in On This Island alongside cellist Leo Popplewell in James MacMillan's Cello Sonata No1. On Thursday, mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons sings A Charm of Lullabies* and violist Jane Atkins plays Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata.

The pianist is, of course, our artistic director - the one and only Libby Burgess.

*Did you know that a ‘charm’ is the collective noun for goldfinches?
