hi! closing 2023 with a very grateful post about a recent life changing chapter of my life: iisma in lancaster university🥰

never have i actually thought that i would be able to experience studying abroad in my life, let alone in the beautiful lancaster uni, if it was not for this program‼️

to this day i am very grateful to have been introduced to 24 other wonderful undergraduate awardees who i've spent time together with throughout finishing our journey in lancaster. our time in earby flat in pendle college, study start programme, chasing lancaster ducks around, random offline meetings in grizedale's townhouse or even pendle brew, picnic in williamson's park, hiking the windsfell pike, gym sessions, travelling together, doing challenges from iisma, being a guest in bailrigg fm, dancing with the hiphop society, and so many more, have brought colors to these 3 months🤍

i also met various people in the uni which along the way i became close with, either from the SSP programme, classes, from travelling together, or even some through one passion of mine: dancing💃 i am very very very grateful to gain experience and make memories with all of you.

also.... meet JBB! we created the group to initially join the hip hop society's dance competition, in which we bonded really well🤝 because it was final exam week, we also studied for 5 nights straight after our practices HAHA it was so fun😆 i definitely miss all of you but am sure will meet you again!

studying abroad broadens the mind they say, i would say it is the truth. adapting to a new place, living so far from our comfort zone, introduced to new way of studying, meeting new friends, and travelling, where everything is a challenge in their own ways, is an exhilirating adventure i would not exchange with anything. bye lancaster, i hope to see you again🤎✨

Pink Dot wasn't the only thing I was up to this Saturday! I got invited by the National Gallery to speak to @gallerykolektif , a program to get young folks to engage w the museum. I gave a talk called "Disinheritage: Stitching a History Out of Fragments", describing the hows & whys of "Painted Shadows: a Queer Haunting of the National Gallery". Q&A got pretty deep—Do I see colonialism as a unifying shared experience in Southeast Asia? What impact can the arts have as a tool for queer liberation? Curators also described how queering the museum doesn't have to entail checklists of openly LGBT artists, but confronting how we suppress bodily desire. Way more complex than my own little timeline of the space. Will have to embrace all that if I ever create another queer tour.

Then I got to log off & creep into the Substation's "Still Essential?: Roundtable on the Icon of Stamford Raffles". I missed Liew Kai Khiun, Hong Lysa & Farhan Idris's presentations, but caught some of Faris Joraimi's speech. We'd got to the point that no-one was really interested in debating why the statue should be taken down anymore—what he wanted to discuss were reparations. Also, what kind of ceremony would accompany its deinstallation: would it be solemn?, would we read Suratman Markasan's "Balada Seorang Lelaki di Depan Patung Raffles"?, could this act be viewed as creative & artistic, not just iconoclastic?

During Q&A, Lysa pointed out that as early as 1969, "150 Years of Singapore" was positioning LKY as the postcolonial successor to Raffles; Farhan told everyone to read Achille Mbembe's "Decolonizing Knowledge & the Question of the Archive"; someone pointed out that KL's renaming of its streets after characters in Hikayat had not in fact dismantled its colonial hierarchies. In the chat, Alfian Sa'at directed everyone to my article in JSEAS, "Raffles Restitution: Artistic Responses to Singapore's 1819 Colonisation". & now I'm tempted to adapt that piece for BiblioAsia to reflect the mood of the talk. Maybe with a title like "Raffles Has Fallen"—i.e. the myth of colonial benevolence has *already* been busted. We're just waiting for everyone else to notice. (1st pic by @becinne !)
