What if an archive is more than a place to store memory?

What if it’s a place to notice change?

The latest issue of Acid Free explores evolution, not as a singular event, but as an ongoing process that unfolds across language, culture, technology, family histories, and community practice.

The authors in this issue trace the ways knowledge shifts and adapts, reminding us that archives do more than preserve the past ◡◠◡◠◡ An archive helps us understand the present and imagine new futures.

Issue No. 17 includes eight articles:

→ Mukari Wall: “Terrain and Technology”

→ Peter Hauge: “Spiral-Bound for Los Angeles”

→ Interview with Robert Dirig: “Evolution of the ArtCenter Archive”

→ Mayra Garza: “I Found My Family in a Border Record: Reclaiming Surveillance Photographs as Family Memory”

→ Mimi Zeiger: “Pieces of You”

→ Ryan Green: “Sunlight to Silver: The Ionic History of Sinaloa”

→ Emily Benoff & Kelli Yakabu: “Reframing ‘Voodoo’ Across Systems: Rethinking Archival Description at the Getty Research Institute”

→Chih-Wei Hsu: “Build a bench, you might end up with a library.”

This issue was organized by the editors ⟡ Jen Neville ⟡ Akosa ⟡ Stephanie Becker ⟡ Elena Diebel ⟡ Catherine Falls ⟡ Jenny Galipo ⟡ Sarah Jardini ⟡ Lisa Kahn ⟡ SL Leimbach ⟡ Vern Molidor ⟡ Kelli Yakabu ⟡ Zaira Torres ⟡

LAMAA committee members connected UCLA’s Artefacts Student Group, focused on art librarianship, with Digital Media Arts MFA students for a special tour of Uncommon Ingress. Together, the students reflected on what technologies and materials are essential for the future preservation and display of artworks, and which elements can evolve over time. Congratulations to the MFA students on an amazing exhibition!

The exhibition presented works by Sadia Quddus, Xiner Lan, Chelly Jin & Sagan Yee, and Stamatis Hamouzas, showcasing diverse explorations in contemporary digital and new media art.
