This apocalyptic scene is happening right now. In Tehran. Today. Black clouds covering the skyline. Oil and ash raining down on the streets. Cars coated in dark, oil-saturated water. The Iranian Red Crescent warning citizens that if the rain touches their skin it could cause chemical burns. Residents told to stay indoors and avoid breathing the air outside. This is what happened after airstrikes hit fuel storage facilities across the city. Toxic hydrocarbons, sulfur, and nitrogen oxides are now in the atmosphere over a capital city of 9 million people. And it gets worse. pH tests are showing the freshwater supply is turning acidic. Oil and ash are leaking into the city’s water system. The Red Crescent says the corrosion to water and sewage pipes could be a problem for generations. This war just got a whole lot more expensive. And not in dollars. The Pentagon estimates this operation at $1 billion a day. But that number doesn’t come close to what’s actually happening on the ground. You can’t put a price on poisoned air. On water that burns your skin. On environmental damage that outlasts the war by decades. The strikes will stop eventually. The toxic air won’t clear overnight. The water won’t fix itself. The health consequences will show up in hospitals for years. The people paying that price didn’t start this. They just live there. This is the cost nobody puts on the ticker.
