WELL our first attempt at the Moab triathlon AKA the whole enchilada with rice and beans didn’t go quite how we expected. Figured it’d be hard, but with a narrow window of time for two workin’ fellas to get er done, we had to try when the conditions were a bit less than ideal. Had some pretty fantastic skiing, followed by a slog back to the bikes then a slog through Kokopelli clay until we hit the rippin’ slickrock of porcupine rim. Spencer started developing a gnarly cough during the bike that ended up being the result of a perfect storm of bronchitis, an asymptomatic viral infection, and pulmonary edema, as he found out later at the emergency room. I decided I wanted to continue with the paddle, but some logistical jangling left me starting at 10:45 pm. I kayaked for 14 miles but only ended up 11 miles downstream. Y’all can try to guess how that happened. Since I was only averaging 6mph on the water, I didn’t feel great about my chances of making it to lake Powell before dark the next evening, so I decided to bail by camping by Gold Bar rim. Learned a lot about how to do it next time and had a ton of fun in spite of everything. Huge thanks to @caseysande and Ben Luck for the long boats, @yellav and Mrs. Beck for the shuttle help, and of course @becksboofs for being my partner in the sufferfest. Stoked to try again in the future! #tukanutup #dirtyasskink
