This @ravenreignsdesign team's collaboration spread illustrates a very cryptic runestone's text. Rökstone (~800 CE) contains the longest viking age runic text found.

This spread shows what is written in real Viking age runes, as I imagine it. In the cover you can see the sun and the moon, battling brothers of the sky. There's a valkyrie with a wolf coming to open the sky for the final battle, Ragnarök, the great battle, and a eclipsed/red moon/sun. In the window there are 2 men fighting which refers to the battle in the Rökstone text. In the final page you can see a real viking thomb from Åsum, Denmark. With this I want to say how historical knowledge from the Vikings is really constructed, from thombs and scribbles, by pen and shovel. Plus, they were real people that lived and died.

On the other side of the pages you can see runes written in both younger futhark runes (8th-12th c) and older futhark (2th-8th c). This are the actual carvings from the stone. On the other backside page there are 2 brothers, þòR (Thor) and ViðaR (Vidar). Those are the sons of Oðinn (Odin). It says "Who does the wolf stain with blood" under their pics. In the last 2 pics there's the whole of the runestone text translated into English.

The stone itself is an example of a runestone that contains more than "Siggi was here"- tags. 😁 In the runestone there are 9 riddles that commemorate a dead son Vämod. In the riddles there are traces of lost folklore and knowledge about microclimate change, for example. Of course this stone has been reserched for a very long time, almost 130 years. It was first believed that the runes tell about a battle, but the battle is metaphorical, between death and life, sun and moon, light and shadow.

The was a great mass extinction and famine because of microclimate change we call the "Small Ice Age". In this period (536-660) half of the population of Scandinavia was lost. Finland was still living in prehistoric era then. The red and ecliptic moon are also mentioned for example in Edda, the Medieval collection of Old Norse narrative poems.
