🇬🇧 The compound eyes

Bees have five eyes, and strictly speaking, two of these consist of several thousand tiny individual eyes. These eyes are called compound eyes and are always found on the sides of a bee’s head. The eyes can vary in size. Each of the individual tiny parts of the compound eye creates an image that is transmitted to the optic nerves and the brain. The brain then combines these into a single, complete image.

Fun fact: did you know that some bee genera have hairy eyes? For example, the honeybee (Apis) and the cone bees (Coelioxys). These hairs can be used to measure air currents. However, it is not known why some bee genera have them and others do not.

▪️Anthidium strigatum

🇬🇧 Today I’d like to share with you one of my little bee highlights from this year, which I spotted for the first time in @hortus_chiroptera’s garden. I’ve come across the host species, Anthidiellum strigatum, time and again over the years, but this beautiful dark bee had successfully hidden from me.

In Germany, most dark bees are actually black in colour, sometimes with small white or yellowish spots. This species is the only exception; globally, however, there are significantly more black-and-yellow species.
Dark bees are all cuckoo bees that specialise in various species from the genera Osmia, Megachile, Anthidium, Anthidiellum, Heriades, Hoplitis, Lithurgus and Chelostoma.
So, if you want to spot this species in your garden, you need to ensure that the host species, Anthidiellum strigatum, feels at home.

🇬🇧 🐝 The metatarsus

I’d like to introduce you, post by post, to the individual body parts and identifying features of bees. As always, please let me know what you think – and if you like it, feel free to leave a like and/or a comment.

The feet (tarsus) of bees always consist of five segments, lined up one after the other like jewels on a necklace. Starting from the body, the first segment of the foot is usually called the basitarsus. And because all the posterior body regions in insects are prefixed with ‘meta-’ (front = pro-, middle = meso-), the basitarsus of the hind leg is therefore called the metatarsus (in fact, it should technically be called the metabasitarsus).

The metatarsus is an important identifying feature that distinguishes bees from other groups of Hymenoptera, as in bees it is generally flat and broadened. Unfortunately, this is not always as clearly visible as it is here in the honeybee. In closely related digger wasps, for example, the metatarsus would be round and conical.
On the underside, you can see rows of hairs that act as a sort of comb for the bee. This allows her to comb the pollen out of her hairs very effectively.

🆔️ Apis mellifera
🇩🇪 Honigbiene
🇬🇧 Honeybee

🇬🇧 We’re all probably familiar with honeybees – especially since they’ve become such an indispensable part of our global food supply. You usually see the worker bees busily flying from flower to flower, and in summer you can also spot the drones quite easily.
But have you ever seen a queen bee?
As you can see in the photo, she looks almost like a worker bee; at first glance, you might mistake her for one or overlook her. What’s particularly striking is her very long abdomen, in which up to 2,000 eggs mature each day.
In the bee colony, the queen is not a queen in the human sense, she has a role to fulfil. When she is no longer able to do so – for example, due to old age – the honeybees are not exactly gentle and replace her without hesitation.

Wilde Ecken & Totholz zulassen 🪵

🆔 Colltes hederae
🇩🇪 Efeu-Seidenbiene
🇬🇧 Ivy Bee

🔭 Aug-Okt
🛋 Solitary
🌼 Spezialized on Ivy (Hedera helix)
▪️ Epeolus cruciger, Epeolus fallax
⭕️ Unendangered

🇬🇧 The bee year is coming to an end and it’s getting harder and harder to spot wild bees on the flowers 🐝
For one species, however, the season is only just getting into full swing – just as the ivy is flowering.
If you want to help this species of bee, you need a combination of open, sandy patches of ground – which can still be quite well overgrown – and flowering ivy. And this is where it gets tricky, as ivy needs to be mature before it starts to flower. However, if you don’t want climbing ivy in your garden or on your house, you can opt for shrubby ivy (e.g. Hedera helix 'Arborescens'), which flowers earlier 🐝

🇬🇧 While the females are quite difficult to identify, the males of this bumblebee species make it a little easier for us. At first glance, they resemble the males of the Red-Tailed Bumblebees, but the yellow band on their backs is much less pronounced. The most distinctive and important feature for the identification of this species is the striking yellow hair on the underside of the thorax.

🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

🇬🇧 ome bees are very striking in color and easy to recognize compared to other species. But you shouldn’t always rely too much on their appearance—and especially not on their coloration. That’s because bees have a problem similar to ours: the older we get, the grayer and balder we become—and the same is the case for bees, as you can see in these pictures. What once looked beautifully fresh and vibrantly colored becomes very faded after a few weeks of flying around outside in the sun day after day. A vibrant red turns into a washed-out orange, and a beautiful beige becomes a dull grayish-white. And some bees even lose their hairs, making them really hard to identify by the end of the flying season.

Would you have recognized that these are all the same species?
