My Nanni left this world a week ago on April 5th at 12:15am surrounded by her children. I was in the thick of an 18 month sleep regression with my youngest daughter at that moment, trying so desperately to rock her back to sleep. In those long, sleep deprived mama moments, I often think about my Nanni. I wonder how the heck she did it with six kids, a job as a piano teacher, church organist and choral leader and the generational expectations of managing all the household chores and cooking. And it’s in those moments when I think of her that I’m reminded of those reserves of strength that we as moms have. The dig deep kind of reserves that somehow push you to keep going. That’s one of the many gifts she gave her six children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren in her 94 years … the never give up and do what you need to do for your family kinda strength and love.
.
This weekend we laid her to rest next to my grandfather after 17 years of them being apart (52 years together). It’s so hard to say goodbye to someone who has influenced so many aspects of my life, as a woman and mother. But looking around at our big extended family, it’s clear that she’s not really gone. She’s so vividly present in each of us. She created this remarkable legacy that we are all so lucky to carry on. It was just time for her to take a well deserved rest after so many years of loving and protecting and cooking for all of us.
.
And so instead I’ll say goodnight Nanni. Thank you for always having a fridge full of meatballs and for establishing pie as a breakfast food. Thank you for the wonderful summer memories that were a pillar of my childhood and for sharing your gift of music with me and so many. But most of all … thank you for teaching us what family truly means and for helping me dig deep during those sleepless mama nights. I know you are there and always will be ♥️🎶✨

Today, I am grateful for family. Grateful for my actual family, my chosen family, my shred family, my revy family, my Brew Pub family, my forever family, my girl family, my high school family and all the other families of friends I’m apart of. Sometimes families aren’t always blood and don’t always get along. But I am grateful for each unique group of families in my life that make me feel loved. Happy Turkey Day Family!! 🍗🍂🍁🦃
