“You’re a mess.”
“Once a cheater, always a cheater.”
“You’re the problem”
“You’re too sensitive.”
“You’re naive”
“You’re too nice”
“You’re a selfish brat”
“I guess we both have a little bit of Slytherin in us.”

I still hear them. Messages & voices from my past. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life & I know that at the end of the day, I’m responsible for choosing to repent, reconcile when I can, & grow.

I wrote “Pretend” from my personal perspective on how trauma affects our identity which affects our choices. I’ve never met anyone with a perfect past and I don’t believe that exists. This isn’t about being perfect, it’s about progress and growing in awareness and health.

I have spent most of my life focused on forgiveness, acceptance & compassion towards others, especially those who played roles in my trauma. This song was about me finally making space for how it’s affected me & being vulnerable about my role in the cycle of shame.

Shame keeps us trapped in cycles of abuse. The abused become the abusers, the victimized remain victims. None of that was ever meant to be a part of our identity.

As I’ve grown in realizing that my mistakes don’t define me, setting healthy boundaries for myself & others, I have learned to combat those shameful messages with the truth.

I am forgiven.
I am made perfect in his image.
Every day is a new day.
I have agency.
Dignity is mine because of whose I am, not my circumstances.

Over time, I’ve continued to shed old patterns that kept me wrapped in my pain. As I step into my strength more & more, I not only release the past, I embrace my future knowing I can trust myself because I can both let go & grow with God’s guidance & amazing resources like therapy, the Bible, & good community.

I am no longer a puppet at the mercy of my shame and circumstances. I am the puppeteer, trusted with free will and agency by a Good God who wants nothing but love and truth for me.

If you can relate, I encourage you to not give up on yourself. I hope this video can be a reminder to everyone out there that you are not alone and you can always choose to grow 🦋

Creative Tip: When tying string on your fingers, you don’t need it to be super tight- lol Learned that lesson the hard way 😅
