Organising the Hop Harvest Fest for @innerwestaletrail has been awesome, but it was even more fun attending and bumping into friends, new and old, at each stop.

I did the festival twice (well, 3 times if you count speed runs in to drop off more tshirts and passports on Saturday) and it was amazing and inspiring to see the craft community out in force supporting indie beer in the Inner West. Cheers to all the breweries, brewers and staff for making it a top notch event.

Already getting excited for the next festival in the works!! But first, a big nap!

Another year of the Newcastle Beer Fest has wrapped, and what a day it was. This past weekend, Athens and I headed north, swapping city streets for sea air to experience the festival for the first time, and it didn’t disappoint. Set against a postcard-worthy coastal backdrop, the weather played its part to perfection. Sunshine lit up the day while a gentle ocean breeze kept things comfortable, setting the tone for a relaxed afternoon. The layout was spot on, with breweries lining an elevated walkway overlooking a wide grassed area, where a stage hosted a steady rotation of local live music. It created an easy, flowing atmosphere that carried seamlessly from one pour to the next. What really stood out was the sense of community. Familiar faces like @beersandbon and @beardthatbrews were great to see, while new connections, including Matt @thecraftbeermc , Craig @craftbeerblogboy , and Matt @bottomoftheglass , added to the experience. It’s that mix of mateship and discovery that makes these events so memorable. The brewery lineup was as strong as it was varied, featuring local favourites alongside standout names from further afield. Precursor Brewing (@precursorbrewing) drew plenty of attention, not just for what was in the glass, but for their unforgettable setup, a custom beer dispensing system built into the back of a HJ47 Toyota Land Cruiser. If you know, you know why this was so cool, and the steady queues said it all. There was plenty to enjoy across the taps, from revisiting favourites to trying new releases (reviews to come). Grainfed Brewing Company (@grainfed_beer) represented the local scene with confidence, while Stoic Brewing (@stoicbrewing) made the trip up from the South Coast and delivered as always, catching up with Andrew, Rachel and the crew was a highlight. All up, Newcastle Beer Fest delivered on every front, great beer, live music, and an atmosphere that struck the perfect balance between laid-back and lively. If this year is anything to go by, it’s only getting better. Cheers to craft beer. 🍻

Merino Brewery – Cali IPA (6% ABV)
The first Friday back after the holidays called for a return to tradition, which meant heading straight to Merino Brewery. There’s something comforting about resuming the weekly ritual, especially when it’s rewarded with something new on tap. Enter the Cali IPA, a style I can rarely resist. A classic West Coast IPA at heart, it opens with a gentle sweetness before quickly unfolding into layers of tropical fruit. Mango leads the charge, with a touch of passionfruit following close behind. Just as the palate settles in, a subtle flash of citrus, lemon or lime, lifts the finish, before easing into a light, clean hop bitterness that fades almost as quickly as it arrives. This is a decidedly sessionable take on the style. Light-bodied, easy drinking, and bright golden yellow in the glass, it carries a soft aroma of tropical fruit without overwhelming the senses. While I have a deep love for the bold, resinous, punch-you-in-the-face West Coast IPAs, this one takes a more restrained and approachable route, and it works. A welcome addition to the Merino stable and a perfect beer to kick off the year’s visits. Cheers to craft beers!

Merino Brewery “Hazy Pale Ale” 5.4%ABV.
After my last post, my thoughts have kept circling back to local beer, and more specifically, to Marino Brewery. As my local and one of my long-time favourites, Marino has always held a special place in my fridge, but their recent rebrand and refreshed can artwork gave me the perfect excuse to pause and really appreciate what they do so well. This hazy pale, in particular, is one I return to time and time again, and it felt worth sharing.
In the glass, it pours a glowing golden yellow, lightly opaque, though restrained compared to some of the murkier hazies out there. The aroma leans immediately into tropical territory, with a sweet, inviting fruitiness. On the palate, a gentle malt sweetness leads the way before layers of passionfruit take over, joined by subtle hints of mango. Midway through, a soft citrus note, think grapefruit rather than sharp zest, cuts through, before the beer finishes with a light, dank bitterness. It’s never overpowering, never lingering too long, and instead works beautifully to balance the fruit-driven sweetness.
This is a beer that feels thoughtfully made and endlessly drinkable, much like Marino Brewery itself. Supporting local breweries has never felt more important for the craft beer industry, and beers like this are a reminder of why it matters. Find your local, visit often, drink fresh, and support the people keeping craft beer thriving.
Cheers to craft beers!

2025 has been an exceptional year in craft beer for me. From brewing alongside one of my favourite breweries to the honour of meeting Chuck Hahn and serving on his tasting panel, it’s been a year defined by unforgettable experiences. I’ve travelled to some of Australia’s finest breweries, met incredible people, formed genuine friendships, and tasted some truly outstanding beers along the way. To the brewers, bartenders, and brewery teams I’ve had the pleasure of meeting: thank you. You are the heartbeat of this craft beer community, and your passion, generosity, and skill are what make it so special. And to the beer lovers I’ve shared conversations, tastings, and laughs with: thank you. You’re the reason this community is so inclusive, welcoming, knowledgeable, and, above all, fun. I wish I could thank each of you individually, but that might take until this time next year. Just know how deeply grateful I am for your openness, warmth, and willingness to share. Here’s wishing everyone a fun, safe, and unforgettable New Year’s Eve, and here’s to an exciting 2026 ahead.
Cheers to craft beer.

‘Tropical Sunrise’ DDH IPA from @rangebrewing 🏝️🌅🍺

Third can from the Bon Box and… WOW. This one’s a legit tropical escape in a can 🏝️🍍

Brewed as part of Range’s ‘JUICY on Vacation series’, Tropical Sunrise brings the “I’m on holiday” energy. You’ve got juicy layers of stonefruit, passionfruit, and grapefruit, all wrapped up in a super soft, silky body. It’s smooth, fruity, and just the right amount of bitter to keep it balanced 🍑🌴

For the beer nerds: this one’s dry-hopped with Nectaron, Nectaron Cryo, Simcoe, Nelson Sauvin, and NZ Cascade Amplifire pellets – a proper fruit bomb with depth.

Perfect for sunny days, slow sips, or convincing your mates that “yes, craft beer can taste this good.”

Would I drink again? No question. This is a vibe 😎
