Mental Health Matters 💚

My journey has been incredibly challenging, marked by my diagnoses of anxiety, depression, and PTSD at the age of 13.

Growing up in the South Asian community, I often felt isolated and misunderstood. The stigma surrounding mental health made it difficult to express my struggles. Phrases like “just be strong” or “what will people think?” often left me feeling trapped and silenced. Many of us face the dual challenge of battling our mental health issues while also navigating cultural expectations and family pressures.

Despite these hurdles, I’ve realized the importance of breaking down these barriers. I want to create a safe space for open conversations about mental health, where we can share our stories without fear of judgment. Each narrative has the power to resonate with others and can inspire someone to seek help.

To anyone facing similar challenges, I encourage you to start the conversation about mental health within your family and community. Sharing your experiences can help others feel less isolated. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help, as therapy can provide you with valuable tools and strategies to manage your mental health effectively.

It’s also crucial to prioritize self-care by engaging in activities that bring you joy and peace, whether it’s journaling, exercise, or meditation.

I’m committed to advocating for mental health awareness in our community, fostering an environment where everyone feels seen and heard. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. I’m always here for you. Together, we can break down the barriers and build a supportive community.

Growing Through Gratitude: My Autism Journey

Lately, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a South Asian organization, supporting families with autistic children. This experience has been incredibly enriching, teaching me so much about myself and the importance of the work I do.

Through patience and understanding, I’ve learned to connect with these families, who face unique challenges. Despite these challenges, they’re resilient and determined to give their children the best support possible.

Education plays a pivotal role in this process. By educating ourselves and others about autism, we can foster greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance. This includes learning about the diverse needs and strengths of individuals with autism, as well as the challenges they may face in navigating the world around them.

Through open and honest conversations, we can break down stigmas and misconceptions surrounding autism. By sharing our experiences and perspectives, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and accepted for who they are.

It’s important to remember that autism is just one aspect of a person’s identity, and it does not define them as a whole. Each individual has their own unique talents, interests, and contributions to offer to the world.

As we continue to have these conversations and deepen our understanding of autism, let’s reaffirm our commitment to embracing diversity and fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusion. Together, we can create a world where every person, regardless of their neurodiversity, is celebrated for the incredible individual that they are.

Mental health challenges can impact one’s ability to be a supportive friend. Conditions like anxiety or depression may lead to isolation, difficulty in communication, and a reduced capacity for empathy. Coping with personal struggles can make it challenging to actively engage in a friendship, sometimes causing unintentional neglect or misunderstandings. It’s crucial to approach such situations with empathy, understanding that a friend’s behavior might be influenced by their mental health, and encourage open communication to foster a supportive relationship.

Despite mental health challenges, individuals can adopt strategies to be supportive friends:

1. Open Communication:
Encourage honest conversations about mental health. Being open helps in understanding each other’s needs and challenges.
2. Setting Boundaries:
Establishing clear boundaries ensures that both friends are aware of each other’s limits, promoting a healthier and more understanding relationship.
3. Active Listening:
Practice active listening to comprehend your friend’s emotions and experiences. Providing a non-judgmental space can strengthen the bond.
4. Educate Yourself:
Learn about your friend’s mental health condition to gain insights into their struggles. This knowledge can enhance your ability to offer meaningful support.
5. Regular Check-ins:
Consistently check in on your friend’s well-being. Small gestures, like sending a text or making a quick call, can make a significant difference.
6. Participate in Their Support System:
If your friend is comfortable, be involved in their support network. Attend therapy sessions together or join activities that contribute positively to their mental health.
7. Respect Their Journey:
Understand that recovery is a process. Respect your friend’s pace and celebrate small victories, acknowledging the progress they make.

Remember, being a good friend involves patience, understanding, and a commitment to supporting each other through the ups and downs of life.

Happy Early Internationals Womens Day🤍

Power and influence can come with great responsibilities, but it can also come with a control that can be truly beautiful!

It was not that long ago, that woman were kept inside boxes, and kept silenced.

During my adulthood, I have learned so much of what it means to truly be defined as a strong women. These are some of my key learnings.

1. Strong women are not afraid of asking for help. It is important to be open, to your weakness and gaining strengthen from others.
2. Loving yourself,no matter what society expects you be. It is about owning up to your truth and not being afraid to be fearless in a world, that may make you feel like you are not good enough.
3. Being not afraid of being alone. Date yourself and know who you are. Create strong female friendships and learn from each other. Take yourself out for a drink sometime ;)
4. Know your own self worth, and don’t accept anything else. You are good amazing as you are. Do not settle for anything, then the best because you deserve it.
5. Strong women, lift up other women! Stop comparing and start cheering each other on!

In conclusion women, are one of the strongest human forms on earth. You are full of potential, and only you are in your own way. Keep going and never stop, even when life keeps testing you.

Be unapologetic you!

Typically the tattoo hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil is very popluar tattoo and for some people it is a way of living such as me. When I decided to get this tattoo, I wanted to do a twist. Instead of getting the three monkeys, I decided to get differnt hands making the image of hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil.

It is unknown when the three wise monkeys first appeard. They hav been brought into Buddhism by a monk in the 7th century. The legend says that this monk, while he was travelling, was escorted by a monkey.

According to this idea, each time we see something terrible, a part of it enters our body. In the same sense, hearing the evil or speaking of it makes a part us turning into evil.

Even though it can be challenging it is important we stand for the capabilty to walk away from evil, to abstain from conflict, and to steer clear of distress, we should try and work to be able to walk the stright and narrow path when possible.

This tattoo is a reminder even when I am not always doing the right thing, I can try again and pick up myself up and do the right thing even when it is challenging.

The Truth about Therapy & What it has taught me…

As many of you know by now, I suffer from mental health challenges. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression as well as PTSD in my early teens.

As someone who grew up in a South Asian and East Asian household, therapy was frowned upon. I was told, I should work through my emotions privately!

However over time, this made my mental health even worse. So I decided to start therapy and the journey has taught me so much about who I am.

I wanted to dive into the benefits of therapy and what I have learned from it. I know there is a lot of stigma behind therapy but please give this post a read!

So why therapy? Not only has it helped me short time but it will has also helped me long term as well . The reason is because not only are you dealing with the present but you are able to gain tools to help you deal with any future problems that may arise.

I used to have a lot of physical symptoms. When I am stressed, I get headaches, I cannot sleep and become sick constantly. My body shuts down. Through working through my emotions, I have noticed less physical pain. I am not a doctor, but I would prefer talking over medication any day. However I have needed medication in the past alongside with therapy ! Please consult your therapist and doctor before deciding the best of the course of treatment.

I have also learned that past emotions can come back. Trust me, it is the worst thinking you have dealt with something, and it keeps back to hunt you! I have learned that you can keep trying to avoid problems and run, but it will come back eventually. Therapy has helped me to deal with the past, present and future!

Lastly by going to therapy it has helped me see things in a new light. Instead of seeing things negativity, I have been able to challenge my cognitive distortions. I am able to see, that sometimes I need to step back and revaluate the situation before assuming the worst.

Again, everyone is different. Do what’s best for you always! below I tag some places for therapy and resources in the GTA.
