I entered the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers Conference with some degree of trepidation. This was my first-ever writing conference, and I’d never been in a writing workshop before, so I didn’t know what to expect. I also was the only attendee from Singapore and knew zero other attendees prior to the conference, so I was worried about making friends, but all the lovely people I met soon put those fears to rest. Shoutout to the most amazing workshop group under the tutelage of @ramonaausubel! ✍️🥰

@ramonaausubel’s craft class encouraged us to explore the structure or shape of entities as a container, and how the narrative structure of a piece changes its meaning. I’ve been thinking a lot about the mountain as a container - a container for the living, breathing humans that formed the conference, but also for the experiences that sprang to life within. ⛰️

Where else would I get to listen to acclaimed writers like @ninamcconigley, @ben.a.goldfarb deliver lectures on empire and ecosystems/nature in the built environment; traipse through the forest in search of red efts with the inimitable Helen Macdonald @emerillon and @hottakehellion; hear @ramonaausubel read aloud the story that first made me fall in love with her writing; see fireflies for the first time; get my books signed by writers I deeply admire (@mayhewbergman @antonhur @ninamcconigley @emerillon to name just a few) wander through Robert Frost’s cabin and wonder at the books that he used to thumb through; take selfies in his toilet and closet with Habiba and @timixsanni ; be given license to frolic through the grass with @olubunmi.adeloye as part of writing inspiration for Ramona’s craft class, wax lyrical to @poetlola about arapaimas; dance our hearts out at the closing party under a shimmering disco ball? 🏡🌳🦎📚🤳🏕️🪩🕺
I could name so many more experiences, but I’ll stop there.

What an honour and privilege it’s been to be on the mountain with you all! What reckless abandon, what unbridled joy. ❤️📝

Took a pit stop between Seville and Malaga… turned into cotton candy skies, the cliffs of Ronda, and sunset over the whitewashed homes of Setenil de las Bodegas ✨ totally worth it.
