TONIGHT!

Join us as the experimental electronic heavyweights TV Pow kick off a tour! Matthew Davis performs with solo project on the heels of his recent release Free, and ambient duo Open Seki kicks off the evening. Formed in Tokyo in 1995 and based in Chicago since 1996, TV Pow is a trio of composers and free improvisers working across experimental electronic music. Working across experimental electronic music and free improvisation, the trio uses samplers, synthesizers, laptops, percussion, invented instruments, turntables, and tape manipulation to create evolving soundscapes that blend electronics, ambient drift, minimalist structures, and field recordings.

Matthew Davis (J0Y.) is a Chicago-based composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist rooted in the past, working in the present and gazing to the future. His evolving practice incorporates synthesizers, plant-based sound systems, and diverse acoustic instruments to create textured, immersive compositions.

Open Seki is the duo of John Biggers (Hefty) and Nathan Tucker (SKAM, Wobblyhead, Consumers Research & Development), endeavoring to scratch that undefinable itch through pulse exploration and phased aural stimulation.

8:30 pm: Open Seki

🎉 2024 has been a wonderful year for Lumpen Radio. We are deeply grateful to our hosts, DJs, staff, volunteers, guests, and listeners for your support. 🤝Thank you for uplifting and amplifying the voices, stories, and culture of our city and beyond.

This year, we launched 20 new shows, series and collaborations bringing an exciting mix of local and international content to the airwaves.

Music: alluvia’s fluid, Jungle Excursion, Listening Device, Soultronic, and Love Supreme. Talk shows: The Changes, Mouth on Mic, Dish with David, and Tech Scene. Multilingual: Chit-Chat Cheer HKers (Cantonese) and Xochipilli Radio (Spanish). Limited series: Men I Have Ever Met, Entrelazadas, and Art Design Chicago Talks, How to Make a Scene and Midway Atlas On Air.

Our Lumpen Specials highlighted artistic projects and social conversations like the 2024 DNC and Presidential Elections coverage. 🗳️ Bringing expert analysis, interviews, live reporting, and panel discussions with journalists, activists, and artists, featuring a nationwide collaboration with WORT, WZRD, Pacifica Network, and WBAI.

Our community-driven projects: Neighborhood Audio Portraits, invited residents from Little Village, Bronzeville, and Back of the Yards to share their stories through audio collages. We organized our Lumpen Radio Record Fair and activated our on-site Record Booth in several locations.

Our New Arrivals Mutual Aid project provided phones and support to newcomers via our oral history program, while our collaboration with UIC and workers’ rights groups mentored individuals in radio production, leading to the Lucha por Tus Derechos Chicago show. This year, partnerships included Radio Nopal from Mexico City and Juneteenth Productions, which brought their Change Agents podcast to our airwaves.

Two Lumpen Media leaders were honored with awards: Ed Marszewski, named Leader for a New Chicago by the Field and MacArthur Foundations, and Stephanie Manriquez, recipient of the 2024 3Arts Award for her work empowering communities through storytelling. Their contributions continue to shape Lumpen Radio’s mission.

We look forward to continuing to share stories and grow together in 2025.
