KINGDOM CALM: PURPOSE IS POWERFUL! Did you know that working on your God-given purpose can help regulate your nervous system? Sometimes the best way to feel better is to stop focusing on what’s WRONG and start working toward something that makes you feel ALIVE! HERE’S THE BRAIN SCIENCE! 🧠 Less worry: Meaningful activities can help shift your attention away from stressful thoughts. More motivation: Making progress toward something you care about can activate your brain’s dopamine reward system, helping you feel motivated. More hope: Purpose gives your brain something positive to look forward to! More resilience: Research links having a strong sense of purpose with better emotional well-being and a healthier response to stress. More connection: Helping others can bring feelings of joy, belonging, and love. When you’re feeling: REVVED UP? Purpose can redirect your attention away from worry and toward something meaningful. STUCK OR LOW? One small, enjoyable action can help build momentum and lift your mood. Your brain: “EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE!” Your purpose: “Hey! Remember that dream God put on your heart?” Your brain: “Oh yeah! We have things to do!” 😂 TRY THIS TOOL! The Japanese call it ikigai — your reason for being! Ask yourself: * What makes me feel ALIVE? * What gifts has God given me? * Who can I encourage or help? * What’s ONE thing I can do today to move my dream forward? TAKE ACTION! Spend just FIVE minutes doing something meaningful. Write. Create. Learn. Encourage. Dream. Serve. My wonderful coach Megan van Zyl from CPU often encouraged me to reconnect with my purpose and do something to move the needle forward. The program Primal Trust highly suggested as well! So powerful! Remember: PURPOSE ISN’T PRESSURE! You don’t have to accomplish everything today. Even tiny steps count! Repurposed drugs are not standalone cancer killers. I said that first, on stage, before anyone else could. The evidence for the antiparasitics is weak and still mostly preclinical. But weak evidence is not the same as no value. So where do they actually fit? That was the whole presentation at @believebig, and this series walks through it one post at a time. Luca did it!!! All glory to Jesus. Truly, these are the only words we have after these last 2.5 years. 💙🎗️ Here’s a small glimpse into our day of Luca ringing the bell, surrounded by our people, our church, and our incredible doctors and nurses. We took a moment to pray for Luca’s continued healing…and we prayed over our children’s hospital. We prayed that the Holy Spirit would fill the hallways and every room….bringing comfort to families who are facing the unimaginable. Childhood cancer forever changes you. We pray that the Lord will use our family to glorify Him and help others in this new season of our lives. 🎗️ Luca will have monthly labs during his first year after ringing the bell and may need a few IVIG infusions, so we continue to pray that his immune system strengthens and stays healthy. He will be monitored for many years to come, but we are so thankful to have him off chemotherapy where he can now thrive and heal. 🎶 KINGDOM CALM: THE POWER OF MUSIC! Sometimes your nervous system just needs a new soundtrack! Music is one of my FAVORITE tools for emotional regulation, and there’s some pretty cool science behind it! My little DJ Jess LOVES creating playlists with me! She’s only four, but her taste in music is all over the map! 😂 We have playlists for everything: learning, exercising, boosting our mood, calming down, worship, and reflection. We even have special playlists for Mommy and Daddy filled with nostalgic favorites. We love sharing the memories and stories behind the songs! So why is music such a powerful regulation tool? 🧠 Boosts mood: Music we love activates the brain’s reward system, releasing feel-good chemicals like dopamine. Calms the nervous system: Relaxing music can slow your heart rate, ease tension, and help your body shift out of stress mode. Strengthens connection: Nostalgic songs bring back memories and emotions, helping us feel comfort, joy, and connection. Supports focus: The right music can help with concentration, motivation, and learning. Energizes the body: Upbeat music can boost motivation, make exercise more enjoyable, and get us moving! My latest obsession? CLASSICAL MUSIC! 🎻 Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons have become some of my favorites! Research suggests that relaxing classical music can reduce stress and help calm the nervous system. Its rhythms and musical patterns can give our brains something soothing to focus on. Apparently, my nervous system has developed some sophisticated taste! 😂 Here’s the BEST part: Music doesn’t have to be slow to be regulating! Sometimes I need peaceful worship music to remind me of God’s promises. Other times, an upbeat nostalgic favorite is exactly what I need! TRY THIS: Create playlists for different moods. 🎶 KINGDOM CALM: LET THE MUSIC WORK ITS MAGIC! Feeling tense, overwhelmed, or activated? Sometimes your nervous system just needs a new soundtrack! Music is one of my FAVORITE regulation tools, and there’s some fascinating neuroscience behind it! 🧠 THE SCIENCE: 🎵 Brain chemistry: Enjoyable music activates the brain’s reward system, including pathways involving dopamine, which can improve mood and motivation. Heart rate and breathing: Calming music can reduce physiological arousal, helping slow your breathing and heart rate. Memory and emotion: Familiar, nostalgic music activates brain networks involved in autobiographical memory and emotion. Those positive associations can create feelings of comfort, connection, and safety. Rhythm and predictability: Musical patterns help organize attention and can influence physiological rhythms, supporting emotional regulation. Here’s the fun part: Music doesn’t have to be slow to be regulating! Sometimes an upbeat, nostalgic favorite is exactly what your brain needs to shift gears. MY KINGDOM CALM TOOLBOX: I have playlists for different moods and genres, including nostalgic favorites, peaceful worship music, and LOTS of classical music! Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons are some of my favorites. Apparently, my nervous system has developed a taste for the finer things. 😂 Classical music often combines predictable patterns, rich harmonies, and changes in tempo that can engage attention and promote relaxation. There’s nothing uniquely magical about Mozart, though. The music that works best is often the music YOU genuinely enjoy! Worship music adds another beautiful layer for me, redirecting my attention toward God’s love, promises, and faithfulness. TRY THIS: Create a few playlists that match different emotional needs. When you’re feeling activated, choose music that helps you feel grounded, peaceful, connected, or uplifted. Sometimes you need deep breathing. Sometimes you need Bach to come in and handle the situation! 🎻😂 “The Lord is my strength and my song.” — Exodus 15:2

🌿 Mistletoe Therapy & Hope in Integrative Cancer Care 🌿 As a physician practicing integrative medicine, I am a firm believer in exploring the full spectrum of supportive and complementary therapies available to people facing cancer—and mistletoe therapy is one that has been deeply meaningful in my clinical experience. I am especially grateful for the work of @believebig, an incredible foundation dedicated to supporting cancer patients and families, advancing research, connecting patients with trained practitioners, and helping make mistletoe therapy more accessible through grants and patient advocacy.  Over the years, I have witnessed patients with advanced cancers, including stage III and IV disease, incorporate mistletoe therapy into their broader cancer care. Their journeys have been powerful reminders of why we need compassionate care, open-minded research, and more options for patients and families. Mistletoe has been studied in numerous clinical trials, including research examining quality of life and other outcomes. That is why the research and advocacy work of organizations like Believe Big matters so much. When someone hears the words “You have cancer,” life changes in an instant. Having people beside you who can offer education, resources, compassion, advocacy, and hope can make an enormous difference. I am grateful for the physicians, researchers, advocates, patients, families, and donors who continue to ask questions, pursue research, and hold space for healing.
