After receiving the news last Sunday…coming to grips with losing my brother Pio has been heartbreaking. Not only because we lost an incredible human being, but because of the enormous hole he leaves in the lives of his beautiful wife, Gretchen, and amazing daughter, Allegra. Pio shared his cancer journey openly and fought like a true warrior. His strength, vulnerability, positivity, and unwavering ability to show up for it all were deeply inspiring. He couldn’t have wished for a stronger woman than Gretchen by his side. Pio and Gretchen were the first to bring me to Maui to perform back in 2008. Our bond was instant, and I became part of their family. Watching Pio and Allegra made me want to be a dad. At the time, I had no idea if that would ever be in the cards for me. Pio (Pro surfer) also taught me how to surf. When I was struggling to stand, he told me: “Don’t get too much in your head. Become one with the water.” The very next time, I rode my first wave as Pio and Gretchen cheered from a distance. I still hear you. Later while back in LA, Pio asks me to send him my DEEP logo. The next thing I knew I had received a call from the post office that I had a large package waiting for me. Pio had custom-made a surfboard for me. Who does that?! Pio does. That’s who he was. He didn’t just tell you he cared. He showed you. I’m certain many that knew him have their own Pio stories Whether on Maui, Bali or LA… our shared belly laughs, adventures 🐋 and meals will remain amongst my most treasured memories. Pio, you left a space that can never be filled, but you also left pieces of yourself in so many of us. Those pieces will keep you present in our hearts. The love and support for Gretchen and Allegra through messages and the GoFundMe (link in bio) show just how many lives Pio touched. Maui fam, please join tomorrow at @bellesurfcafe (last slide) to celebrate Pio’s life and support the fundraiser for Gretchen and Allegra.
