In all the excitement about the Bayeux Tapestry arriving back on these shores for the first time in 900 years, there's been little commentary about what it actually *is*. For a clear-eyed look at this - and indeed of thousands of years of British history - Graham Robb and his superb THE DISCOVERY OF BRITAIN is your man.

From Ch.11, 'Conquered':
The 'tapestry', which Graham describes as 'a uniquely bamboozling needlework chronicle' depicts (sort of) the events culminating in 1066, when 'the young kingdom which had been united under Æthelstan in 927 became a vassal state of a few hundred scions of Frankish Vikings' [which is what the Normans were]. Robb warns against the queasy danger of nostalgia: 'It can contemplate war and destruction with a blank face and a blissful smile. The Norman Conquest as a concept is now well into its second childhood. The Bayeux ‘Tapestry’ – which is not woven but darned with wool like an old teddy – depicts events which affected the entire population, but it now looks more like a comic strip than the propaganda of an absolute monarchy emerging from its early kleptocratic phase. Its embroidered half-truths and scenes of gloating savagery seem endearingly simplistic.'

Anyway, something to think about while you queue up at the British Museum! Better still, read this 'treasure house of a book' (The Spectator). As The Observer's review said: 'Rarely does history feel so beguiling.'

DI-DENTICAL !!! What would you have done if you had turned up at a party wearing the exact same dress as Princess Diana? It actually happened to my friend…

“It was the 22nd June 1985 and at around 10.00pm I found myself driving through a thicket of paparazzi, down the drive of Windsor Castle, to attend A Midsummer Night's Ball - the 21st birthday party of Prince Edward and his three royal cousins. I had been invited almost by chance, and felt something of an imposter in the beautiful black velvet and ivory silk Murray Arbeid ball dress which I had borrowed from my older sister.

Once through the doors, I fiddled with my Butler & Wilson paste jewellery nervously as I scanned the huge crowd for the handful of people I knew at the party. Finding a friend, he told me that I had committed the egregious faux pas of wearing the same dress as Princess Diana. What to do? Should I leave the party? A consultation with the Queen Mother was arranged and she said kindly that if Diana insisted on wearing "awf the peg" clothes than this kind of event was bound to happen. "Go and have a lovely time and think no more of it" the Queen Mother urged me.

I made sure to display my dress to Diana and Charles on the dancefloor, to their gentle amusement, but it was an otherwise uneventful party. Outside, the tired paparazzi - in the grip of Diana mania - were getting desperate for a story. What started as a "mystery blond upstaging Diana" ended with a few tabloid photographers camped outside my door offering me ever larger sums of money to pose in the dress. I declined, but "Dishy Natasha" and the beautiful borrowed dress got their fifteen minutes of fame.”

Featherhood. Sat down to read. A few quiet minutes. Just a few. Many hours later, this has swallowed me whole. A memoir which soars with wonder, compassion, heart.
