Today, we went to the bosque to learn about how much water is collected in water wells and where trees grow best to access water.🌳🏞☀️

BEMP hosted its annual Crawford Symposium at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building, bringing together UNM students, educators, researchers, schools, and community partners to showcase projects and environmental stewardship efforts connected to New Mexico’s Bosque ecosystem. The event highlighted student research, community engaged learning, and collaborative work focused on conservation and environmental education throughout the year.

We’re thankful for our Field & Community Science program, which brings students from schools across Albuquerque to our campus, where they have the opportunity to engage in science that matters beyond the classroom. 🌎

Thank you for helping this vital work thrive.

🌍 Thirty scientists from around the world joined BEMP’s Kim Eichhorst for a field trip across Sevilleta and Bosque del Apache.
In this clip, Dr. John Maria Bonari from Italy reflects on the experience-calling the scale of restoration projects here “unbelievable”-and shares how he hopes to take what he learned back to Europe.
This experience connects directly to UNM’s latest big news: the ARID Institute at UNM, with strong involvement from the Biology Department, just received a $7M NSF grant to transform forest and watershed management statewide. BEMP, housed within UNM Biology, is proud to be part of this effort-engaging K-12 students and communities in hands-on science that’s shaping the future of New Mexico’s ecosystems.
Watch how global science meets local impact.

Office of Community Engagement joined Kim Eichhorst-Program Director at BEMP and a Research Professor in UNM’s Biology Department-for a field visit to Sevilleta LTER and the UNM-run field station alongside scientists from around the world with the International Association of Vegetation Science. We explored one of the most biodiverse ecological transition zones in the Southwest. UNM anchors this work with long-term ecological studies, NSF-backed monitoring, undergraduate programs, bosque classroom initiatives and its close collaboration with BEMP. Speaking of which-go check out the Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP)-they’re doing groundbreaking work monitoring groundwater, water chemistry, litterfall, arthropods, vegetation, and more across the Middle Rio Grande bosque, and they’re bringing students and the community directly into the field. We also visited Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge for a deeper look at regional ecosystem dynamics. This partnership is about connecting global science, education, and habitat preservation-from the university to the field.

Honored to share insights grown from my time as a Forecast Public Art Change Lab Fellow, where I researched the intersection of public art and climate resilience. Forecast Public Art @forecastpublicart — a national nonprofit founded in 1978 — activates, inspires, and advocates for public art that advances justice, health, and human dignity.

As the third Change Lab Fellow, I explored how public art can strengthen communities facing climate challenges — especially here, in a place like New Mexico, where communities have long navigated layered histories, vast ecological shifts, and enduring inequities with deep creativity and care.

In this conversation, I’ll share my research findings and recommendations. I’ve invited the amazing Sherri Brueggemann, former Public Art Urban Enhancement Program Manager for the City of Albuquerque, to join me and share her insights from 20+ years of public art leadership in this complex and resilient state.

Grateful to Forecast Public Art’s Change Lab for standing behind this work and for reminding us that community and the terrestrial landscape are never apart — they endure together. Join us — link in bio. #climateresilience #publicart

The Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program or BEMP @bemp.nm studies the riparian forest along the Rio Grande in New Mexico. Students work with BEMP as part of their school science curriculum, taking multiple field trips to the bosque to collect data, from counting insects, to measuring leaf litter. This week, the Kids hear from BEMP educators Zoe Watkins Daniels, and Anne Montes.
