“The Last Homely House is a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness” — from The Lord of the Rings

Mossy Hollow on Marcia Rd may not be Rivendell, but it is home. And in my prayer room, there does seem to be a wonderful cure there…there’s certainly a nice reading chair in there!

Books are like friends. I listen. I converse. And with the best friends, I return to their company often.

I re-read Lord of the Rings again this year because @christopher_clowers started the audio book in his car on a road trip. When I breathed in Middle Earth’s air again, I couldn’t stop!

@cgeigs and I had a lot of joy this year and a lot of sorrow. The Wind And the Willows became a place of solace and consolation for us both. It was good to be with Ratty, Mole, Badger, and even Toad—dear friends.

On @nic_manley ‘s bacherlor trip, many of the groomsmen recommended a tale of shipwreck, murder, and mutiny—The Wager. It was riveting!

Funny enough, I spent many hours in conversation with Peter Kreeft and Paschal about another wager in the latter’s Thoughts and the former’s thoughts on the Thoughts. That Wager is not a ship but it is an invitation to board the ship of salvation.

I also loved solving murder mysteries with Lord Peter Wimsey. What a delightful man.

I travelled the seas with David Balfour and Gulliver and yes, even Thor, as he hunted the Midgard Serpent in Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, which is a MUST READ.

Lastly, I travelled the spiritual sea of the soul with Thomas A Kempis and his work The Imitation of Christ. While an old text, it was practical, relevant, and accessible. It’s not of any one time but all times.

Our Bodies Tell God’s Story…I spent a good deal of time writing and thinking about the body and sexuality this year, as one does. West was a great guide!

GK Chesterton has the best command of the English language over any other writer…fight me. Every essay I read was the best essay I had ever read.

Oh and I sat in Socrates’ classroom and was hopelessly lost. I have a lot more to learn!
