What an experience at the @ritz_cinema last night!

A HUGE thank you to @iandarlingshark and @sharkislandinstitute for the kind inclusion to watch the world premiere of ~ The Valley Film ~

3 hours of intentive creation - filmed in Kangaroo Valley, the place we call home.

It was an incredible experience to be a part of this film. To see it on the big screen, and the fine company of our local community was even more amazing than we could have ever imagined!

Grab some 🍿 popcorn, settle in and make time to enjoy seeing The Valley! It's certainly a special film to watch.

Congratulations to all the Shark Island Team 👏

THE VALLEY

A story of country village life in one of the world’s seven enclosed valleys. A meditation, exploring life and community in a secluded location.

This film has been a big part of my life over the last three years. Being involved in a project like this, in my home town, has opened me to opportunities, new friends, colleagues and experiences.

Starting in March 2023, I came into this project as a camera and editor assistant. Since then I have been fortunate to work, observe and develop my craft as a budding filmmaker.

Over the last three years I’ve been welcomed to contribute and learn from the Shark Island Institute and the world of documentary filmmaking. I have been warmly embraced and mentored by the production team of ‘The Valley’ - ACS DOP @ben_cunningham_acs , producers @sarahbearbutler and @kate_hodges , ASE editor @sallyjfryer and sound recordist @emmadarling__ . And to @iandarlingshark , the director, producer and creative spirit of this film, I hold immense gratitude. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn and contribute to the making of this film.

The team at Shark Island have become my extended family - I’m very grateful for their time, patience, advice, good humour and deep generosity.

The Valley will premiere at the SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL on the 7th of June at Randwick Ritz and on the 11th of June at the State Theatre in Sydney. So book your tickets friends.

Over this last year I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate on two unique projects in my home town.

One of them was working on @sharkislandinstitute ‘s feature documentary called THE VALLEY (coming soon) as a camera assistant and film editor during 2023-2025.

The other was working as a production assistant and photo editor on of the Valley Portraits taken and exhibited by @iandarlingshark . This also included the great opportunity to take Ian’s portrait, as displayed in this post.
Ian’s fifty portraits capture moments in time of Kangaroo Valley locals who feature in the documentary.

THE VALLEY PORTRAITS are being exhibited at The Old Store in Barrengarry this weekend from Friday Nov 21st to Sunday Nov 23 - Fri/Sat/Sun from 10am-4pm. Would love to see you there!

My dearest thanks to @iandarlingshark and the wonderful team at @sharkislandinstitute for this unique opportunity. The time spent observing and learning out in the field, practising my craft, being able to make mistakes, and of course channel my inner blue steel as a stand has been a great working experience.

My new album, First Snow (Music for Piano and Strings) is released this Friday.

My friend @ben_cunningham_acs shot this slow and meditative video clip for the lengthy title track, First Snow. I really admire Ben’s spectacular aerial and nature cinematography. The clip loosely follows water from the highest snowy peaks to the ocean, speaking to a timeline beyond human experience and a connectedness of all things. The minute detail in these monumental landscapes deserves to be watched on the very biggest of screens.

Christopher Moore - viola
Michelle Wood - cello
Tamara Murphy - bass
Nick Batterham - piano, synthesisers
Carlo Barbaro - reeds
