One week since our jazz night and we’re missing it already… ★ ☆

When we first came up with this idea for a benefit concert, we immediately knew this was a special one. The best reward, though, was seeing how special it was to all of you as well.

Our mission as a mutual aid org is to provide the community with both the tangible and intangible resources it needs to survive. On a night like last Friday’s, we saw our mission come to fruition. An $8 entry fee turned into so much more possibility for our initiative.

Thanks to your support, our organization is able to provide students with even more food, clothing, literature, reproductive care products, hygiene kits (and an incoming emergency fund for students).

Major thank you to @taoscoop for being great hosts and giving us the perfect jazz club. And another round of applause for our phenomenal three bands who knocked our jazz socks off: @readingclubband @benbbarker @bengoodmansax

And final thank you to @out.ofthedrafts , @austin.sds , and @ut_sils for helping us curate the event and do some coalition building. We are so lucky to be surrounded by other orgs who support our mission and help us succeed.

Keep an eye out for a montage being posted soon… Eager to plan our next one, SSN ★ ☆

As we count down the days to our Annual Fundraiser TOMORROW, we’re continuing to shine a spotlight on the talented people who will be joining us for Broadway Through the Decades!

Today, we’re highlighting Ben Barker!

Ben is a talented pianist, music director, and educator in the DFW music and theatre community. A Waxahachie native and jazz piano student at UNT, Ben has brought his musical talents to numerous North Texas productions and has become a wonderful part of the Second Chance Players family.

Ben previously served as Music Director for our 2024 production of Next to Normal, and we’re incredibly excited to have him back behind the keys for our upcoming production of Bare: A Pop Opera, coming this January!

But before we get to Bare, you can catch Ben performing with us at Broadway Through the Decades!

Join us Saturday, September 19 at Central Commons for an evening celebrating Broadway through the years, featuring an incredible lineup of DFW performers.

Doors open at 7:00 PM, and the show begins at 7:30 PM.

Admission is pay-what-you-can at the door, with all proceeds supporting Second Chance Players and helping us continue creating theatre and community here in DFW.

Come spend an evening with us, support local theatre, and hear some incredible performers — including Ben Barker!

We hope to see you there!

We sat down with Dallas-based ADOLESCENT to talk about how the band came together, the influences behind their sound, and the Dallas music scene that helped shape them into the musicians they are today.

Rooted in jazz but pulling inspiration from everywhere: Prince and N.E.R.D. to Allan Holdsworth, George Duke, Madlib and The Mars Volta. ADOLESCENT has spent the last five years developing a sound that’s entirely their own.

As Diego puts it:

“If N.E.R.D. had a baby with Allan Holdsworth, it would be ADOLESCENT.”

Swipe through to get to know the band, then come experience it for yourself.
