For my sophomore year film we had to do a 3-2-1 (3 pages, 2 characters, 1 room) and I really wanted to use this as a chance to play around since I so rarely make my own films as a DP. Having always been a sci-fi head, I thought that would be a fun direction but decided that I wasn’t going to try and inevitably strike out at some high budget sci fi look, I was going to keep it simple. That’s where I think a lot of filmmakers mess up with genre, they try for the expensive looking parts instead of keeping it as rudimentary as possible (think Her as an example of great simple sci fi).

I really liked the idea of a frosted window look that had this super graphical element to it, so I tried to figure out how to get that effect, eventually just squeegeeing 216 onto my windows over an hour or two. I’m really happy with the end result and the only thing I can say that was challenging about it was the fluctuating color and intensity of daylight throughout the day that I had to work with.

For those who are curious when I say no budget, I had a loaned red Komodo from my buddy, some zeiss cp2’s, and props I loaned from the prop house plus a custom made hoodie with an umbilical cord made out of Home Depot parts. Some might say that’s pretty high budget (cause there’s always someone who says that if it wasn’t shot on an iPhone it’s not no budget) but I think this was pretty low.

I’ve got a few more things down the pipeline from projects I’ve shot more recently once they go through color and post. Stay tuned

"The Pack" - Senior Thesis Short Film
