Pretty good shooshin' in the Cascades the last few weeks. Catching up with friends and doing the ASGC. Time to pull on rocks for the rest of the year.

November wasn’t good to me and I’m not sure if December and January will be much better. But I’m chugging along, doing what I can on the days I feel ok.

I’m dealing with three unrelated medical issues that, on their own, would each feel totally manageable. But all at once is frustrating, uncomfortable, and overwhelming.

I thought long and hard about training through this mess since I technically *can*. But as we all know, just because you can doesn’t mean you should 🙃 so I took it as a sign that my body needs some chill. And things have been chill for a bit. No heavy lifting, no running, being smart with climbing intensity/volume on days I feel good enough to climb, and a couple days of super mellow skiing.

The good news is that I’m doing all the things and making all the moves to feel better. I’m having minor oral surgery next week (which should be life changing) and I’ll know more about surgery for the more obnoxious issue in January after we give my body another month to try to heal on its own first.

I know this is vague, but I do regret how much I shared when I was sick back in 2017. This is nothing like that, but I don’t really want people’s opinions or assumptions, and well… people have a lot of them!! I’ll share more of what I’m comfortable sharing soon.

Main pic is from the one good day of skiing I’ve gotten. The rest are all of the dogs the last month, who love it when mom isn’t training 15–20 hours a week!!

Hit up Red Rocks canyon to get some multipitch in! Led a pitch on Man’s Best Friend, followed on Physical Graffiti, and led Soulshine 🥹 heart is filled with joy and now all I can think about is building anchors 😅

Putting yourself out there and falling flat on your face really sucks. I would know, it’s happened to me plenty over the years. As a lot of you know, I’ve been dealing with a chronic overheating issue for 5ish years now, and it feels like I get more heat sensitive every year despite all my efforts to adapt.

My 214-mile race came to an abrupt and embarrassing end at mile 70 on Friday night. I felt good for the first 20–25 miles before the sun started to spank me. From 25–40 I got really hot, but was still able to keep calories and water down. Running around Convict Lake in the shade gave me some relief, but the second I stepped back into the sun I threw up. And kept throwing up for the next 10 miles. By the time I rolled into Crowley I was fully depleted, but after nearly an hour there I managed to keep some carbs and salt down.

The next 6 miles to Tom Place actually felt fine and I started to feel hopeful again. But then even tiny sips of water came right back up for literally 10 miles until I was dry heaving. I was in a deep hole and it felt like there was no crawling my way out of it.

I thought about pushing to 100 “just because,” but those miles were un-crewed and I didn’t feel very confident in my legs after keeping next to nothing down the previous 30 miles. I didn’t want to end up as a medical liability for the race, so I withdrew after 45min of deciding what to do at the aid station💔.

I’m really proud of my crew. They helped me make the best decisions possible with what I was dealing with.

I’m embarrassed and disappointed, but I’m also proud that I showed up and tried, even without much longer-distance racing experience. For now, I think I’m pumping the brakes on racing (in running👀). Still going to run plenty because I enjoy it and it keeps me fit for mountain things. Just less volume for a while I focus on skiing and climbing again for a bit and reevaluate what I want out of racing (again lol).
