The Horology Club goes to Italy! 🇮🇹 It all began with a visit to the beautiful Patek Philippe Watch Art exhibition in Milan, ending the day with a great dinner alongside our Milan THC members. Next, we journeyed to Firenze, Modena and Maranello. Our first day was fully hosted and organized by @mattioandre , and what a special day it was. We visited the Ferrari and Pagani factories, enjoyed an incredible, authentic Italian lunch and dinner unlike anything most of us had experienced before, and visited a century-old family farm producing top-grade balsamic vinegar. A real treat, and we came away appreciating this Italian specialty even more. Again, thank you to Andrea and Giacomo for an unforgettable day. Day three was just as memorable, hosted and organized by @paolofini1984 . We met at @hotelorologio_florence in the heart of historic Florence, where Sandro Fratini, one of the true gurus of Italian watch collecting, hosted us and shared stories of how he began collecting in the 1970s. This was followed by a private tour of the Uffizi Gallery, where we took a specially arranged 1-kilometer walk through the Vasari Corridor: the elevated enclosed passageway built in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari for the Medici family, connecting Palazzo Vecchio and Pitti Palace via the Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio. Then another fantastic dinner, where we enjoyed Bistecca alla Fiorentina and sang “Volare” together to celebrate international friendship. Thank you to Andrea, Paolo and Jean-Paul @jpmenicucci for the special perfume souvenir. There are too many others to thank, and you know who you are, and we look forward to welcoming you soon to the next THC event. TWO EBELS. ONE WATCH. ONE DECISION. 🥊 You probably haven’t seen this before. And chances are, you never will again. ⚔️ VOTE: A or B? A — DISCO VOLANTE Restore the original Staybrite case, replace the missing fixed lug bar and crown, and return this extremely rare Ebel to its original 1930s configuration. B — PIECE UNIQUE Clean and service the watch, preserve the historical modification, and put it back inside its custom-made gold shell — a configuration that is almost certainly unique. Which one would you save? A or B? And now, the story behind the fight. Just two weeks after I acquired this Ebel — incidentally, already the most popular watch ever shown on my profile, outperforming even my Ulysse Nardin piece unique and Cartier Jump Hour prototype — it finally landed on the bench of my watchmaker, @renovebytuloki. We knew there was something unusual about it. We didn’t know quite how unusual. Our working hypothesis: The watch started life in the early 1930s as an Ebel Disco Volante. After roughly 35 years of wear, one of its fixed lug bars appears to have broken away. Instead of simply repairing the original case, its owner chose a far more radical solution: he had the entire Staybrite watch fitted inside a custom-made gold outer case. The gold is unhallmarked and its purity still needs to be tested. But inside we found something even more interesting: a handwritten watchmaker’s marking dating the intervention to 1965. So, sometime around 1965, one Ebel effectively became two watches in one. Then came the difficult part. During the examination, Ilja @BenjaminMarcello pointed us in a direction that forced us to do something we had initially hesitated to do: separate the original watch from the gold shell after approximately 60 years. And six decades of close contact inevitably left traces. The original Staybrite case has substantial pitting on the contact surfaces. Returning it to its original Disco Volante form would therefore require professional case restoration, reconstruction of the missing fixed lug bar and installation of the correct crown. Which leaves us with a genuine conservation dilemma: Restore or preserve? #renovebytuloki #ebel
