Dozens of prints in two hours, and nobody planned a single one of them. Ebru marbling with @benjamite1061 who learned it from master printers in Istanbul. You drop pigment on water, comb it, pull the paper, and magic happens ✨

GO'C is extremely excited to host Seattle-based artist Ben Beres for our September First Thursday opening!

Our friendship with Ben goes back some 15 years overlapping in many creative spaces around Seattle. In 2014, we started working with Ben and the SuttonBeresCuller trio on Mini Mart City Park in Georgetown, a community-focused cultural center, art gallery, and park that went on to win an AIA Seattle Honor Award, an AIA National Small Project Award, and a WA Council Civic Design Award. As a member of the artist collaborative and our client on the project, Ben has been an important part of our ongoing conversation around the intersection of art, architecture, and community.

For more than two decades, Ben has explored printmaking as a deeply personal and experimental practice, working primarily through detailed etchings on copper. His densely layered compositions bring together words, images, symbols, and patterns, creating unexpected relationships and new worlds within each plate.

Beres’ practice has expanded beyond traditional printmaking into vitreography (printing with glass plates), etching on glass, and performance. He teaches printmaking at Cornish College of the Arts and vitreography at Pilchuck Glass School, and is one third of SuttonBeresCuller, a conceptual art trio whose work spans sculpture, performance, and public art.

Come join us for an opening reception on September 3rd from 5-8PM during the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk. Our GO'C office in the historic Schwabacher Building at 89 Yesler Way Suite 401 will be open to the public to gather, experience Ben’s work, and celebrate the connection between art and architecture.

The work will be on display and for sale throughout the month of September. Email us at info@gocstudio.com to schedule a time to visit if you can’t make it to the opening.

𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘, 𝙿𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚝 𝙵𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚜!

This week Miranda speaks with artist, educator, community-builder, and all-around creative force Ben Beres.

Ben first joined the podcast way back on episode six of Hello, Print Friend (née Pine | Copper | Lime), and in this episode sits down face-to-face in Chiang Mai, Thailand with Miranda while he was here for a residency at Hello Print Friend Studios.

A lot has happened since 2019. A global pandemic, major shifts in the art world, the loss of loved ones, new creative obsessions, and the inevitable perspective that comes with getting older and staying committed to a life in the arts.

They discuss growing up as the son of a pastor, building community through art, teaching the next generation of artists, and what it means to keep making work when art is no longer just something you do, but something that has become the fabric of your life. They dive into his recent fascination with paper marbling and vitreography, the evolution of his practice over the last several years, and the role that travel, experimentation, and collaboration continue to play in his creative life.

They also talk about his time in Thailand, the prints he created during his residency, finding inspiration in unfamiliar places, and the ways different cultures can challenge our assumptions about how life is supposed to be lived.

This is a conversation about art, grief, curiosity, aging, friendship, and the strange privilege of getting to spend decades doing the thing you love.

Ben Beres has been with us here in Chiang Mai for the last two weeks, taking in the details (big and small) of everyday life and collecting them into this massive maximalist lithograph. From friendly devils to market scenes, temple motifs to quiet street corners, the print is layered with observations of daily life in Northern Thailand.

What elements of Thai life do you recognize? 🕵️

Could not be more excited to present the work of Ben Beres @benjamite1061 in the shop! Long-time Seattle artist and personality, Ben has been printmaking for the past two decades, with a focus on creating detailed works through the process of etching on copper. Over the years his practice has expanded to include work in the as yet experimental arena of vitreography, etching on glass, and public engagement through performance. He teaches printmaking at Cornish College Of The Arts and vitreography at Pilchuck Glass School. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in Ben's case, a picture might contain THOUSANDS of words. Hanging now through the end of January.

and that’s a wrap. Had a very fun and strangely good/weird time mis/directing people as part of a brilliant @suttonberesculler performance piece for @walkdontrun_sea today in Seattle, a place I was born in, barely recognize anymore, am re-acquainting myself with now, and am truly re-falling in love with, due only to the good and amazing people who live here… who love art… who’ve loved the satire, free speech in the street and the first amendment long before some A-hole co-opted the lingo, ran it into the White House then turned it on the people he supposedly represents. Just a good day to be reminded that there are those of us fighting the good fight. And low and behold, it always seems to be artists and those who love the arts. Always
