Video Split technician and lovely man Ben Robinson @bennrob with a double camera offering on the set of ‘Dalliance’ earlier this year. The first camera is his Fuji film X-T3 sporting a rehoused disposable lens made to look like a little choccy Oreo.

His second camera is a modified Olympus Trip. Something he built in a lab to shoot these incredible stretched frames on 35mm film. This process is called ‘slit scan’ photography. Similar to a widelux film camera but much more trippy.

Some sample shots are there and also the book that inspired it all at the end. Check out Ben’s break down of both cams below 👇

Slitscan Olympus Trip
This DIY modified 35mm point-and-shoot is ill-advised if you are shooting on a budget. The aperture ring is permanently fixed open, meaning the film begins
exposure when the lens door is opened. The cardboard square inside is covering the mechanical cog which counts the film, tricking the camera into
thinking it is loading the film for the first time. This leads to an exposure time of about 4.5 seconds. When the shutter is pressed, the camera winds the film
across the 1mm slit creating a very wide image. Whatever passes in front of the lens is exposed, so moving targets such as cars and commuters became a fascinating subject for me on my travels. The
element of chance and play was at the centre of my experimentation with this process. If I were to pan the camera midshot, the image will scan whatever is in
front of me creating more abstract results.

Oreo Lens
This Retropia lens is compatible with my Fujifilm X-T3 when programmed into lensless mode. It is a re-housed disposable camera lens which for only $90 has
become a favoured part of my kit. It has a fixed focus with minimums at roughly 2 feet, and an aperture of roughly F11, making in compatible with my Fuji which
performs well in lowlight. With the increased cost of film over the past decade it’s been nice to step back from the techy world of digital and limit myself with a
system that creates nostalgic results. #filmcrewcamerastyle #nolink #slitscanprocess

Here are three more of our TOP 11 Finalists in the UNEXPECTED PERSPECTIVES photo competition, and they've got something in common.

Bryce Hughes - 'Changing of the Guard'
Ben Robinson - 'Barceloneta'
John Chapman - 'Coalesce'

Each of these photographers used pure imagination to flip the familiar to show us something unexpected. Same world, and 3 completely different set of eyes. The judges enjoyed working these out...

Tune in for more Finalists tomorrow.
In the meantime, head to our CCP website (Community dropdown) to vote in the People's Choice Award.
