Join @uncasheville_newmedia and @templeofseaweed for the Opening Reception of the exhibition Watermark: Hurricane Helene New Media Works by Temple of Seaweed, on Friday, September 25th, 5-7pm, The Sami Zoobi New Media Gallery, 3rd Floor, Owen Hall, 100 Theatre Ln, UNCA. What is the story that’s told in the wake of a natural disaster? In the two years since Hurricane Helene Temple of Seaweed has sought to create deeply moving stories about the slow, weathered shape of survival. Geologist Brian Yanites said, “Helene was a powerful reminder that natural hazards don’t disappear when the skies clear—they evolve.” So do the stories of the people in our community. This exhibition, specially curated for the Sami Zoobi New Media Gallery, features films by Temple of Seaweed and a photography series by local artists curated by Kai Lendzion & Naomi Lee. It invites viewers into an immersive, participatory remembrance of Helene: to cross the threshold of grief's release and explore the emboldening possibilities of renewal. This show is dedicated to Sami Zoobi, who passed away in Hurricane Helene. Watermark is sponsored by the Dogwood Health Trust, UNC Asheville Student Community Coordinator funds, and The Department of New Media at UNCA. Temple of Seaweed is an Asheville-based film collective formed in 2025. Its post-Helene films have screened at international film festivals, were featured nationally in Orion Magazine, won best short climate film at the 2026 My Name is Climate festival and received the 2026 Mountain Strong Award at the Asheville Film Festival. Temple of Seaweed’s films, photo retrospective, music video series, storytelling and town hall about Hurricane Helene were presented at Madison Square Garden, the Asheville Art Museum, Dogwood Health Trust’s Annual Convening, White Horse Black Mountain, Story Parlor and Deep Time Cafe. @memory.terra @dogwoodwnc @nickole.brown @infinitewow @melissa_thesciencecommunicator @ashe_vegas @blueridgepublicradio @wlos_13 @mountainxpress @uncabluebanner @unc_asheville @unca_campuslife Watermark Poster

It feels like we are experiencing a powerful cultural moment. The spell is breaking. People are waking up. Love is rising. And I truly hope and pray the tides continue to turn.✨ ✨ I am re-sharing “Rest, then Rise” (song from 2024, video from 2025–amazing artistic collaborators tagged!) to add my / our voice(s) to the chorus of love and liberation for all. And I’m also sharing this again to remind myself and others that we don’t need to keep outsourcing our power to celebrities.✨ ✨ We have been conditioned to get caught up in the drama of what the rich and famous are doing, and we are at risk of staying stuck focusing on celebrity worship / cancel culture if we aren’t careful. And all of that is just a distraction anyway.✨ ✨ At the end of the day, the power is in the hands of the people. And what we each do or say (or don’t do or don’t say) matters. We must be our own heroes. We must have each others’ backs, especially the backs of those who are most marginalized and oppressed in these current toxic systems.✨ ✨ This piece of art (full video🔗 ⬆️) has been one of my offerings in this time, one way of sharing my voice and my medicine with the collective. But there are so very many ways we can all show up to speak truth to power in these times and be the change we wish to see.✨ ✨ How we parent. How we spend. How we vote. How we share our resources. What we give our attention to. How we treat the land and our more-than-human kin. How we care for people in our community (or across the nation or the globe) who may not look like us but are very much interconnected with us.✨ ✨ Our liberation, our healing, our hearts are deeply intertwined. And none of us are free until all of us are free. We each have a role in these transformative times.✨ ✨ Tend to your part of the web, shine your one-of-a-kind light, and offer your heart in your own unique way. May we each rise up to use our voices, our talents, our dollars, our attention to stand up for ourselves, each other, our planet, and our collective future.✨ ✨ #noneofusarefreeuntilallofusarefree #weareallconnected #musicmedicine #powertothepeople loveandliberationforall

What happens when people from different sides of a war sit down together? 25 years after 9/11, people whose lives were shaped by the wars that followed sat in the same circle. They told their stories. Asked hard questions. Listened. Not to erase what happened. But to see the human being on the other side. This is *What We Carry.* 🔗 Link in bio 🎬 @benphanstudios #WhatWeCarry #HumansNotHeadlines
