Ben Cory Jones is a writer, producer, director and showrunner who has worked in television, cinema, and podcasts. He co-created and executive produced Boomerang, a BET comedy series partly based on Eddie Murphy and Halle Berry’s popular 1990s blockbuster. He has also worked as a writer and producer on the critically acclaimed HBO comedy series Insecure, which starred Issa Rae and was executive produced by Larry Wilmore. He was also a writer on WGN’s breakthrough slave uprising epic, Underground, directed by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and produced by John Legend.

Following George Lott and Ryan Ashley’s recent conversation with SHEEN Magazine, THE WHOA AGENCY officially introduces the women at the center of the culture-forward series. Omeretta stars as Ari James, Sapphire Blaze steps into the role of Yanni Monroe, and Charity Collins portrays Stormy Sutton. 🪐 SATURNDAY REFLECTION: WHO DECIDES WHAT WE SEE? 👁️⚡️

People in Gary, Indiana have been living without electricity for more than a WEEK following devastating storms.

👉Food spoiled.
👉Businesses closed.
👉Schools disrupted.
👉Families are navigating darkness, heat, financial loss and uncertainty.

And somehow, many of us are JUST finding out. 🤷‍♀️

💻 @morgandebaun of Blavity, AfroTech, & Travel Noire raised an important perspective:

🫸Our social feeds are not neutral.🫷

Platforms are businesses competing for one of the most valuable commodities on Earth:

👁️⚡️OUR ATTENTION. ⚡️👁️

And the information most important to our communities isn’t always the information most profitable to keep circulating.⭕️

💭 That should make us THINK. 💭

Because there are journalists reporting from Gary.

The deeper question is:

WHY DIDN’T THEIR STORIES REACH MORE OF US?

👉Support independent journalists.

👉Subscribe to local news.

👉Fund Black-owned media.

👉SHARE important reporting as aggressively as we share entertainment.

👉Build community information networks that cannot be throttled by an algorithm.

👉Hold corporations, utilities + elected officials accountable.

👉Teach our children media literacy.

👉And most importantly:

👉BE INTENTIONAL WITH YOUR ATTENTION.

Because every click is a vote.

Every share is distribution.

Every subscription is infrastructure.

And every dollar is ENERGY. ⚡️

If the existing information ecosystem doesn’t adequately serve our communities…

WE BUILD ANOTHER ONE.

That is the Saturn lesson.

Don’t merely complain about the structure.
