Crystal and Avery and I attended the Called to Freedom luncheon yesterday. It was great to hear some of the testimonies of people like us who have realized that God grace is a free gift that we dont have to work to earn.

Wish I would have had more time to talk to more people. It's definitely worth attending.

Also, anytime @tyfrench23 is around you know its going to be fun.

Thanks to all the staff of Berean Holiness we loved and would definitely attend again. @bereanholiness

January is Spiritual Abuse Awareness Month! ⛪️ 🩹

I will be doing my part to bring awareness to this subtle and deceitful form of abuse that is often unspoken of or swept under the rug but it’s gaining alarming occurrences and more and more people are coming out of the trenches, their wilderness and healing journeys and are being vocal about it.

Survivors from this type of abuse have suffered emotionally, spiritually, sexually, psychologically and some even have tolerated domestic violence.

Spiritual abuse is often not seen or dismissed, but it leaves those who’ve gone through it often deeply wounded and frail. We go through pain of losing whole communities, finances, even marriages and most are left with a traumatic injury that we never thought we’d carry. Most have been outcasted or made to look like the villain once they were silent no more.

This is not fair, nor should it be accepted in our society today. Abuse in any way shape or form is still abuse. We cannot remain silent about it.

Jesus Wept. He is still our friend, and one thing we all have in common is that we love God and love people and want to honor the life of faith we once gave it all for.

I’ll be going LIVE for the next few weeks starting tomorrow with some pretty amazing and brave people I’ve had the chance to meet while researching and becoming Trauma Informed.
I hope their stories can help you feel less unseen and give you courage.

When we mess up, fail, sin, or do something wrong, what is our initial inclination? Is it to run to God, or is it to run away?

Being a part of a high control/high demand religious environment can often result in a culture of perfectionism, believing that God will only accept us at our absolute best. In environments like these, there is little room for failure or underperformance, and because we are human, it can become nearly impossible to keep up with the rigid demands being imposed on us.

What this creates inside of us is the chronic feeling that we simply are not enough. Not enough for our church, not enough for those around us, and certainly not enough for God. And what often follows right behind is an incredible amount of shame.

Shame causes us to hide. It tells us that we are not and will never be good enough, and will never measure up to where we are supposed to be. And when a church seems to confirm those ideas, we often automatically also direct those feelings of shame towards how God sees and thinks of us.

But God does not see us that way. He is never disappointed in us. He can’t be, for disappointment is the result of unmet expectations, and God’s expectations for us are never more than we can meet, for He knows exactly what we can and cannot do.

When we truly understand this, and know that when we mess up, the thing God desires more than anything is for us to come to Him so he can fill us with love, grace, and healing, we can begin to let go of the shame, step out from our hiding place, and run to God in our imperfection.

This week I am joined by Natalie Edmonson, co-founder and executive director of @bereanholiness, who shares about growing up in the “Holiness Movement” in a church defined by the long list of extra biblical standards and practices that it’s members were required to stringently adhere to in order to be considered a “true Christian”.

Natalie gives us a great in depth look at the tenants of hyper-fundamentalist churches like the one she grew up in, and about the negative ways this style of living and faith had on her ideas of God and herself, including the major ways purity culture affected the way she approached dating and the warped and shaming dynamic between guys and girls.
