There’s a lot worth seeing this September. 👀

(he)ART
For the curious. For the collector.

Viviers was founded and conceptualised on a deep appreciation for art; it started with making, but also collecting...

It thus feels like a true full-circle moment for our studio’s practice to have expanded more formally into curatorial work over the past two years, even though consciously surrounding oneself with art, objects, and beauty is in fact the truest definition of curation. As long as it has meaning.

In light of Art Week, we reflect on our exhibition co-curated with Li Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano, titled “The Last Straw, From Needle Point to Infinity Point.”

Hosted in Lezanne’s Art Deco apartment in Cape Town city centre, the exhibition was presented in alignment with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and Furniture Week.

“The last straw” signals a moment of collective rupture, and invites those engaging with the work to pause.

The quiet joy of drawing the thread through the eye of the needle.
A realisation.
The precision.
The present moment.
A breath.

“The space offered another proposition. Not a retreat, but it felt like a true recalibration. A slower architecture of relation. A recognition that what surrounds the body shapes the body.

Perhaps the most radical gesture during fair week is not to be louder, but to be precise.” — Wonga Majila (@withmy_wo)

A new exhibition, After the Tide, just opened last Saturday at Berman Contemporary in Cape Town. Dutch artist @thirza_schaap constructs sculptural arrangements from discarded plastic she collects along South Africa's coastlines. These sculptural arrangements then become the subjects of her photographs.

Perfectly aligned with Schaap's practice, @viviers.studio joins the exhibition with their curated selection of garments made from discarded couture fabrics and production waste.

Berman Contemporary is a concept-driven, practice-led gallery, founded in 2016, platforming women artists whose practices unfold through sustained inquiry, experimentation, and material investigation.

Get the Picture curates Creative Arts Experiences that connect visitors directly with local creatives and the creative art scene across different genres - including visual arts, music, film, theatre, photography, food and design - through authentic, immersive encounters. To Get the full Picture.

I spent the morning at the V&A Waterfront and what a treat it was! Most people there were dressed in green and yellow and on their way to the rugby game against the All Blacks. I went to @bermancontemporary for the official opening of ‘after the tide’, a solo exhibition by @thirzaschaap .

Thirza Schaap is a Dutch artist who lives and works between Amsterdam and Cape Town. As part of her ongoing Plastic Ocean project, she creates colorful delicate sculptures from discarded plastic that she collects from beaches in South Africa. She then photographs them against soft colorful backgrounds, which results in beautiful still lifes. Her project explores the relationship between beauty, consumption, and environmental responsibility. The soft colours and balanced arrangements, draw you in and almost make you forget what you’re actually looking at, which is waste. As she says ‘I am interested in the tension between attraction and discomfort. Plastic is designed to be disposable, yet it persists long after its intended
use. By presenting waste as something visually compelling, I hope to encourage a closer look at the lasting impact of our everyday habits.’ Living right on a beach myself and witnessing first hand the amounts of plastic that wash up on our shores and pollute our oceans, creating awareness for a way of living more conscious and in tune with our environment is very important.

Every single art piece at the exhibition wowed me and it’s hard to say which one I liked best. One that definitely stood out was Thirza’s take on Monet’s waterlilies, created by upside down plastic bottles floating in a tidal pool. You have to look twice and up close before you realize that what you’re looking at are not real flowers, incredibly beautiful and exquisite.

The exhibition can be visited till 28 November.

Congratulations to Mellaney Roberts (right in the photo) on the Outstanding Visual Artist award at Friday night’s National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA), and to Berman Contemporary, who show her work.

Mellaney works in ceramics, on identity, memory and belonging/otherness - subjects we have been drawn further into as a gallery, and we remain excited about the growth of ceramics and the artists working in the medium.

It is no small thing that two of our represented artists, Gwenneth Miller and Michael Selekane, were shortlisted alongside Mellaney. This photograph from the awards is a joy to see - three artists from three different parts of the country, working in three different ways, and between them asking questions about identity and place that are uniquely ours. We cannot wait to see where each of them goes next, and we would urge you to keep an eye on all three.

From coastal debris to captivating fine art. 🌊✨
Thirza Schaap’s After the Tide is officially on view at Berman Contemporary at the V&A Waterfront, and it’s a must-see. The exhibition pairs her striking photography with the actual sculptural arrangements she created using washed-up ocean plastic.
It’s beautiful, thought-provoking, and a powerful reminder of how art can spark conversations about our planet.
