Today is International Surfing Day, which feels like the perfect time to reflect on how surfing unexpectedly became such an important part of my life.

After moving to Rio, I found myself spending countless hours on Arpoador Rock photographing surfers, chasing light, and occasionally capturing moments that felt almost magical. One morning, I photographed Gabriel Palmeira deep inside a perfect barrel, my personal Holy Grail of surf photography.

But surfing gave me something even more valuable. After losing my mother-in-law and later my best friend, Bodhi, I spent hours by the waves, listening to The Tragically Hip and the crashing surf, working through my grief. Along the way, I was welcomed into a community of surfers, photographers and dog parents whose lives revolved around the beach as much as mine did. Their kindness, positivity, and friendship helped pull me through some difficult days.

I came to Arpoador looking for photographs.

What I found was a home.

This is only part of the story. The full blog post is available through the link in my bio. #arpoador #riodejaneiro #surfistas #internationalsurfingday
