Boysenberry Cane Blight Boysenberry cane blight is a fungal disease that attacks the canes of boysenberry plants, including thornless varieties. It can weaken or kill individual canes and reduce fruit production. 🔬 What causes it? Several fungal pathogens can cause cane diseases in caneberries. Infection often occurs through wounds, pruning cuts, or damaged tissue, especially when conditions are wet. 👀 Symptoms * Dark brown to black lesions on canes * Cankers that expand along the cane * Cracked or weakened bark * Wilting or dying shoots * Canes may die back beyond the infected area * Reduced fruit production on affected canes 🌧️ Why does it spread? Wet weather and prolonged moisture favor infection. Poor air circulation and dense growth can keep canes wet for longer. 🧑‍🌾 How can farmers manage it? * Remove and destroy infected canes. * Prune during dry weather when possible. * Disinfect pruning tools between plants when disease is present. * Improve air circulation by proper training and pruning. * Avoid unnecessary cane injuries. * Keep irrigation from continuously wetting the foliage and canes. * Use only disease-free planting material. #boysenberries #agriculture #agriculturelife #agricultureworldwide #plant

The World’s Tiniest Grain? — Meet Teff Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a remarkable cereal crop from Ethiopia and Eritrea and is widely recognized as having one of the smallest grains of any cereal crop. 🌱 Tiny seed: A single teff seed is only about 1 mm long, making it much smaller than wheat, rice, or corn kernels. 🌾 Grows quickly: Teff can mature relatively quickly, with some varieties ready for harvest in roughly 2–4 months, depending on conditions. 💧 Adaptable crop: It can be grown under different moisture conditions and is important in regions where other cereal crops may struggle. 🥣 Nutritional value: Teff provides carbohydrates, protein, fiber, iron and other minerals. It is also naturally gluten-free. 🇪🇹 Agricultural importance: Teff is a major staple crop in Ethiopia, where its tiny grains are traditionally ground into flour to make injera, a fermented flatbread. #agriculture #agriculturelife #teff #grain #plant

How Does Temperature Affect Strawberry Flowering? Temperature plays a major role in when strawberries form flowers, how well those flowers develop, and whether they successfully produce fruit. * 🌱 Cool conditions help some varieties initiate flower buds. June-bearing strawberries generally form their flower buds during the shorter days of autumn, while day-neutral varieties can continue flowering when temperatures are moderate. * 🌡️ Moderate temperatures support flowering. Day-neutral strawberries generally perform best when temperatures remain roughly within 45–85°F (7–29°C). Growth can slow or stop outside this range. * 🔥 Excessive heat can reduce flowering. High temperatures can cause day-neutral plants to temporarily stop flowering or reduce production, and heat can also interfere with pollination. * ❄️ Frost is especially dangerous during bloom. Strawberry blossoms are more sensitive to freezing than leaves. Open flowers can be damaged around 30°F (−1°C), while tight buds can tolerate considerably colder temperatures. * 🐝 Temperature also affects fruit set indirectly. If cold or heat reduces insect activity or damages flowers, fewer flowers may become well-pollinated fruits. Each flower contains hundreds of stigmas that need pollen for a large, well-formed berry. 🍓 Too cold → flower damage 🍓 Moderate → better flowering and fruit production 🍓 Too hot → reduced flowering and poorer fruit set #agriculture #strawberry #strawberries #strawberriesandbananas

Farmer’s Market bounty… One of the best things! Broad beans from @z4zero.farm, tomatoes from @berrybrookfarm, delicious! Chanterelle recipe below. Quick saute chanterelles: Chanterelles 1/4-1/2lb Avocado oil 2-4 tbsp Butter 2-4 tbsp Garlic 2-4 cloves, minced Lemon (optional) Salt & pepper to taste Clean chanterelles- brushing, rinsing, soaking are all possible methods, depending how clean they are; dry with a paper towel & slice large ones in half. Heat oil to a shimmer over high heat. Use a cast iron skillet if you have one. Add mushrooms and saute, turning and stirring mushrooms, for about 5 minutes or until you have a nice sear (lower heat to medium high as needed). Add garlic, then butter. Turn heat down to medium and continue to stir and sauté mushrooms until garlic is browned and mushrooms are beautifully golden, an additional 3-5 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste, a squeeze of a fresh lemon wedge if you like. Enjoy! #lovingfarmlife #themushroomfarmerscookbook

Why Some Sweet Cherries Look Perfect Outside but Are Rotten Inside Sweet cherries can sometimes appear flawless on the outside while hiding serious damage inside. This problem is usually caused by pests, diseases, or environmental stress that affect the fruit before any visible symptoms appear. What Causes It? 🐛 Cherry Fruit Fly Larvae One of the most common causes is cherry fruit flies. Adult flies lay eggs under the cherry skin, and the larvae feed inside the fruit, causing the flesh to break down and rot while the outside may still look healthy. 🍄 Brown Rot The fungus Monilinia can infect cherries through tiny cracks or wounds. Early in the infection, the skin may look normal, but the flesh inside becomes soft, brown, and rotten before obvious external symptoms develop. 🌧️ Rain Cracks and Secondary Rot After heavy rain, tiny cracks can form in the fruit skin. These cracks may be almost invisible, allowing fungi and bacteria to enter and rot the fruit from the inside. 🌡️ Heat and Stress Extreme heat, drought, or irregular watering can weaken cherries, making them more susceptible to internal breakdown and infections. How to Reduce the Risk * ✅ Monitor orchards for cherry fruit flies and manage them early. * ✅ Remove and destroy infected or fallen fruit to reduce disease spread. * ✅ Prune trees to improve airflow and help fruit dry quickly after rain. * ✅ Water consistently to avoid plant stress. * ✅ Harvest cherries promptly once they are ripe. A cherry’s shiny appearance doesn’t always reflect its quality. Regular orchard monitoring and good disease and pest management are essential to prevent hidden internal rot and protect fruit quality. #agriculture #agriculturelife #cherry #cherryflowers #cherrytree

I think vegetables deserve to be the star. These beautiful carrots from @berrybrookfarm @thetashfm are finished with my homemade white balsamic glaze and served with grilled chicken over a silky cauliflower + white bean purée for extra creaminess and protein. A little more of that glaze over the chicken ties the whole plate together. Restaurant-worthy, but built from simple, seasonal ingredients. White balsamic glaze recipe coming soon. Which vegetable should get the white balsamic treatment next? #WestchesterEats #FarmersMarketCooking #SeasonalCooking #VegetableForward
