OMG!! My day just kept getting better and better. From seeing a college friend of 25 years this morning, to having an amazing Zumba class on Zoom, to taking my 14 year old to his good friend Birthday, to ending my day with my fitness Sis Erica Berry. 🤗 You just never know the reason, timing, and purpose of each key component God allows to enter your life. Truly this beautiful Queen added to my life. A jewel, with so much wisdom, and a tell it like it is type of gal. I enjoyed every moment of our dinner and time together. Thanks!! I got work to do. Let’s Go!! 🥰❤️🙏🏾💃🏾🎁🎊🎉

Oh what a year this has been! We’ve gotten to be part of some amazing community efforts with creative thinkers in all corners of Chatham County. We’ve concentrated our efforts on Service, Solace, and Hope through the arts and this is how that has filtered through Chatham:
- In partnership with Chatham Co. schools and talented artists, we provided: five virtual artist of the month videos for third-and fifth-graders, 37 interactive virtual artist workshops for fifth-grade classes, and roving performances through four neighborhoods;
- We transformed ClydeFEST into ClydeFEST in the Wild this spring, providing multiple opportunities for kids to create art, enjoy live music, and PLAY outdoors – all in COVID-safe ways;
- We established a new ArtAssist for Kids program, getting basic art supplies in the hands of nearly 2,500 kids who needed them during COVID-cautious learning;
- We offered six different grants to artists over the past year;
- Through our Meet This Artist and Go See This series, we promoted 12 talented artists and several exciting local events this fiscal year.
- This year, we were proud to secure more than $100,000 from outside the county to help arts orgs—and the artists they employ—in Chatham.

Thank you for your support during this year of uncertainty. Providing Service, Solace, and Hope through the arts was critical this year, and it was an honor. But it wasn’t something we could do alone. We relied on the kindness and generosity of volunteers, community sponsors, fellow nonprofits, and our board members to fulfill this objective. Without all of you, there would be no sparkle. Thank you.

While we’re away, if you need urgent assistance, you can reach out to Selbe Bartlett, CAC Summer Break Support, at hello@chathamartscouncil.org

In the meantime, if you’d like to support our programming, making it possible for us to invest in artists and educate kids through the arts, click here.

Enjoy the summer. We’ll see you back real soon.

⚖️
Who decided anyway that the force that holds us on to the planet should determine our worth?
⚖️
Is the 280 pound lioness less beautiful, meaningful, worthy than the butterfly that weighs less than one gram? We revere them for different reasons - the lioness strong, smart, brave, powerful; the butterfly graceful, joyful, carefree, capable of radical change.
⚖️
Does our container say anything about what kind of partner, parent, friend we are? The massive, wrinkly elephant and the bumpy, irregular whale are model mothers, but cute, cuddly cats and rabbits leave their young behind. Their sizes tell us nothing about their value in the lives of their mates or offspring or how in awe we are of them.
⚖️
Like many women, the most comfortable I have ever felt was when the scale told me I was too much - during pregnancy, when I cared only about the job I was doing and not whether anyone thought I looked good. I weighed around 200 pounds at the end of each pregnancy and the only other person who knows that is my obstetrician because, ya know, shame. Nearly every other non-pregnant day, since around the age of 13, I have been on a diet; low in calories and nourishment and high in deprivation, shame, embarrassment, comparison, failure and unhealthy, fake, low-cal food. And like many women, regardless of how much I weighed, I was never at my goal. I always felt I could do better, be better, lose more.
⚖️
Maybe instead of weighing ourselves on a scale, assigning our worth a number that keeps us from floating into space - we can measure ourselves like we measure the lion, butterfly, elephant and whale. Measure my happiness, weigh my courage, assign a value to my flexibility, adaptability, sensibility and joy. I’d like you to take a look at how wide I smile, how I convey love with my eyes, how hard I laugh even if it means my belly jiggles more than the world says it should.
⚖️
These days, I have a healthy relationship with my scale... I don't use it. I’d rather fly off into outer space than be consumed by a number that bears no reflection on who I am, how hard I love or how I am loved by others.
⚖️
And that freedom is worth its weight in gold.

This is the first entry in our Strong Women series, where we want to highlight the importance of women in CrossFit and show you that it is OKAY to be strong.
We're talking about all the characteristics that make strong women badass and beautiful, and in the CrossFit space we are LITERALLY building strong women. Women who can do 10 strict pull ups, women who can back squat like it's going out of style, women who can do 100 burpees without even thinking twice. That's pretty cool, right? We not only want to keep up with the boys, we want to be BETTER than the boys. We want to run faster, lift heavier. If it sounds scary, let us show you how much fun it can be. If you think that you can't, you are wrong. You can. I see it year after year. The progress we make, the strength we build, and the confidence we gain.
One of the biggest takeaways I've gotten from CrossFit is the confidence I've found in myself. Growing up, I was PAINFULLY shy and didn't think what I had to do or say was particularly important or interesting. Through the years of CrossFit, my eyes have opened to the things I am capable of doing, and I've realized that was a completely false narrative I told myself for so long. I found that I could do more pull ups than I ever thought possible. That's interesting. I found that I can lift more weight than most of the men I know. That's pretty cool. I found a community of people who support me, motivate me, make me feel like part of something really special, and that is pretty damn important.
I am still a woman who struggles with confidence. What woman doesn't? CrossFit is not a fix all for all of our insecurities, but I know I am a better, happier, and stronger woman because of it.
But that's just my story. Here's what some of the other women of CFCH have to say. "I push myself to physical limits I never thought I would ever achieve and have developed a confidence and resiliency that goes beyond workouts. What we do at CF is truly “functional” - it makes us better at life.” - Laura O. “Strong women are everywhere at CFCH. It is more than just the weight that is strong - the minds of these women match what they lift.“ - @emberry1234
