A program featuring the second piano sonatas of Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Prokofiev, each of which are characterised by drama and pathos, lightness and darkness, and brutality and playfulness. They are presented alongside Enrique Granados’ virtuosic showpiece Allegro di Concierto and Robert Schumann’s beguiling Arabesque in C major.

A graduate of the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, the South African born Australian pianist Berta Brozgul has performed widely across Australia as a soloist and chamber musician. She has been praised for her “masterful” and “strongly individual” playing (John Lill CBE).

MONDAY 8TH DECEMBER 8PM
SOPHIA KIRSANOVA & BERTA BROZGUL
DIALOGUE – SONATAS FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO BY JOHANNES BRAHMS

TICKETS $35 | $25
Link in bio

The Kirsanova-Brozgul Duo was founded in 2022 by two accomplished Melbourne-based musicians, violinist Sophia Kirsanova and pianist Berta Brozgul, to explore the repertoire for violin and piano as equal and harmonious partners in chamber music.

They perform two Violin Sonatas by Brahms - in D minor and G major, composed nearly a decade apart. Though contrasting in character, both works reflect Brahms’ gift for creating a delicate balance between violin and piano—a true musical partnership and deeply personal dialogue.

The G major Sonata evokes the spirit of lost youth and memory. Lyrical and introspective, it offers emotional depth with graceful restraint. In contrast, the D minor Sonata is charged with stormy passion, dramatic intensity and virtuosic expression.

A reminder: Tempo Rubato does not take cash. Please bring a card/ electronic device if you’d like to purchase anything at the venue.

@mcmtrumpets had a wonderful class with Alfie Carslake this afternoon thanks to our partnership with the @australianworldorchestra. @alfiecarslake worked with Riley Brennan (no relation!), Grace Robertson, Tom Hu, and Ben Gittens on some tricky repertoire…all were sounding great after hearing Alfie’s insight and applying his practice approaches. @bertabrozgul was ever the reliable collaborator and sounded wonderful on the works by Bitsch, Broughton, and Gaubert. Thanks for the fantastic class, Alfie - looking forward to hearing you and the rest of the AWO this week!
