"GONE FISHIN" Painting by Lola Sáenz
I started this in 2019-2026 In the Works
My painting Inspired by Small Local Buissnesses that were in the East Village for many years. There's so many other small bizz's that are gone, that aren't on the painting. But I added Local Favorites and other Iconic places. Sadly they all closed down because of High Rent Increases and some People retired.
They are GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!
STOMP was an Iconic Off-Broadway show, it closed Jan 2023 after playing 11,472 performances in a 29 yr run at The ORPHEUM Theatre in the East Village. They closed down because of low ticket sales.

Much loved. Much missed. I took this photo on 16 February 2020, about ten days before the whole world seemed like it was shutting down for good.

Posted @withregram • @jamesandkarla David Johansen, the last surviving member of the iconic glam punk band New York Dolls, passed away this past Friday at 75 years old after battling stage four cancer and a brain tumor. In his honor, we are highlighting Gem Spa, the beloved East Village haunt for egg creams that was located on the corner of St. Mark’s Place and Second Avenue which sadly closed in 2020 after nearly 80 years in business. Gem Spa is not only the spot where the quintessential New York soda fountain drink, the egg cream is said to have been invented at, (swipe left for 2nd & 3rd photos) but also became a hangout for hippies, beatniks and punks as well many musicians in the 1960s and 1970s, who performed at the Fillmore East and the Electric Circus, which were located on either side of the store.
•The New York Dolls shot the back cover for their 1973 debut album, “New York Dolls” dressed in drag in front of Gem Spa. (Swipe for 3rd photo taken by Toshi Matsuo courtesy of @gotweird and for 4th photo of back cover of their debut album courtesy of Discogs).
• Our 2001 35mm film photo of Gem Spa (swipe left for 6th photo) appears in our newly book
“Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present”.
•
R.I.P. 🙏David Johansen and please share your memories of David and The New York Dolls and your visits to Gem Spa with us.
