Fingers crossed it will stay dry for @culturenightbelfast this Friday! but just in case the weather is not kind to us our Design Hothouse Residents have been busy designing and making their own shelter for their exhibition as part of the Community Plant Library using sustainable materials! This will protect their interactive exhibition about plants, design and Belfast which also includes the cutest origami plant pots they have designed that you can pop along and make and take home with you on the night! About the exhibition: During the Design Hot House residency our residents @bethschmidt and @rachelcowie_graphics worked collaboratively, exploring how plants are incorporated into Belfast, this included exploring what grows in Belfast, the city’s decorative features in buildings and their part in history and the benefits growing plants has on us and our surroundings. This led them down a few routes of experimentation through cyanotype, collage and creating shapes inspired by features across the city’s buildings and homes which were also melded into the branding of this year’s Design After Dark. Pop along to Bankmore Square on Friday from 4pm to see their work, learn a bit about plants, design and Belfast and get yourself a mini origami plant pot to take home with you!

Through our Community Plant Library project we have had the chance to collaborate with different organisations including David Keys Sustainable Woodworking who is working alongside Green Re:Make on a range of plant furniture pieces for our event at Culture Night Belfast this Friday. What David and the Green Re:Make volunteers bring to the table is a passion for being deeply considerate about materials, environment and ethics. As well as making decisions about designing environmentally sound objects, they think about what happens to them afterwards and how they will safely biodegrade or be disposed of. David shared a few words with us about his own practice, what he considers when designing and what original objects and materials the planters are sourced from. We spoke with Fergal Donnelly, Head Gardener from Linen Quarter BID earlier this week about all things plant related and you can read his interview in our Plant Stories collection on our website! https://belfastdesignweek.com/stories/fergaldonnellylqbid or via the link in our bio Throughout these plant stories, the most common tip we keep hearing from everyone - avid gardeners and novices alike - is not to over-water, so if you are a "plant murderer," that is our top tip to you! Have a lovely weekend! 🌱

Our next Plant Story comes from Jenna McGroarty, Native Coffee's Events, Marketing and Community Engagement Manager. When we caught up with Jenna last week, there was a lovely buzz around Native. There were cyclists, business-folks and tourists all around us and it was great to see so much activity on the waterfront - even mid-week. We chatted about the role that both plants and design play at Native, how a bit of simple planning can go a long way to lower waste and create more impact and how Jenna is enjoying her other new role as a "plant mom" sharing the tips she has learned along the way. Read Jenna's full interview here: https://belfastdesignweek.com/stories/nativecoffeeni or via the link in our bio Artwork by Design Hothouse Residents Rachel Cowie and Beth Schmidt. Drop by next Friday and see us at Culture Night 2026!

🪴 Plant Stories: FieldDay Ireland 🪴 Our next plant story features locally grown company FieldDay Ireland, "inspired by the native scents of Ireland" and they have some brilliant (and simple!) tips to encourage biodiversity in the garden to "let nature in." "We set up FieldDay back in 2002 to capture and bottle the scents of the Irish countryside; creating fragrance to inspire and connect you to nature. We’ve been long time financial supporters of Ulster Wildlife and were keen to take our partnership to the next level! We love Ulster Wildlife and all they do; looking after our wild places and wildlife, while also encouraging and educating at the same. We really believe that businesses can and should be a force for good in helping to conserve nature for future generations." (Artwork by Design Hothouse Residents @rachelcowie_graphics and @beth__schmidt) The Belfast Community Plant Library is a collaborative initiative that connects people, place, plants and creativity. 💡The idea originated from an impromptu meeting between One Bite Design Studio and Belfast Design Week in Hong Kong in 2024 where they bonded over their common values and vision for creating meaningful, plant-based community spaces. 🪴 One Bite had created Community Plant Libraries in Hong Kong neighbourhoods, helping communities reconnect with nature, place and each other and we thought that Belfast deserved to participate in this fantastic project too. To bring Belfast's Community Plant Library to life, we are also collaborating with: 🪚 David Keys Sustainable Woodworking & the Green Re:Make collective - a community-led up-cycling and circular economy hub 🫛 Jilly Dougan - An “edible gardener,” Author of “Sow, Grow, Munch” and a Director of the Yellow Door, Portadown. ✏️ Thomas Bannon - a freelance illustrator represented by UsFolk Illustration Agency 📓 Design Hothouse Residents Rachel Cowie and Beth Schmidt 🎟️ Belfast Design Week and Blick Shared Studios teams (Christine James, Karishma Kusurkar, Rosy James) We have also been engaging local designers and businesses and gathering plant stories from near and afar! The Belfast Community Plant Library will pop up at Bankmore Square during Culture Night Belfast 2026 (Friday 18th September, 4pm onwards) and will feature an interactive design installation, workshops and of course, the plant library! So… come along to learn more about plants, growing and to take, share and swap plants. Everyone is welcome and no advance booking is required. This event has been kindly funded by Belfast City Council’s Arts & Heritage Fund with venue support from the Linen Quarter BID.
