It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and if you’re not already aware, we adore @fountainhouse and their commitment to empowering folks living with #mentalillness and helping them find their community. As a mad writer and a disabled therapist (who met in a dog park lol), we know that it sometimes feels like you have to “perform wellness” to fit into a space, and the best part about Fountain House is that you can always come as you are and be welcomed. And now, we’re welcoming you to help us support this wonderful organization! For the next two weeks, all donations to FH will be matched up to $100,000, so if you’re thinking about ways you can make a difference this month, here’s a place to start. Link in our bios!

Also if you’re in Canada, FH has also inspired 370 mental health clubhouses worldwide, so if you know someone struggling in the medical system, maybe this might be a welcome pathway for them to walk. Workshops are my love language! 📝 Way before I finished my novel, I started teaching creative writing for folks living with mental illness as part of my healing and advocacy work @camhfoundation . Then I decided to run Japanese Canadian writing workshops @mataashitawriting during the pandemic as a way to reconnect with community around the same time I started my regular teaching gig at U of T. Last year, my hermit crab essay workshop took me from London to Vancouver to New York, where I taught gallery writing workshops with @fountainhouse (including the MOMA, which was a dream!). This week I wrapped up my first romance writing workshop with @flyingbooks_to and I still can’t believe how many amazing people you meet doing this kind of work. I am actually not the best at committing to my own writing (lol) but I am much better at committing to the writers I get the chance to teach. This is all to say - sometimes the journey ends up meaning even more than the goal that gets you on your way 📚

When the power went out right before we needed to start the turkey, we thought Canadian Thanksgiving might be hooped... But thanks to creativity, flexibility and candle hoarding, we somehow pulled off a Thanksgiving meal with no electricity 🦃🍂❤️🙏 one for the history books
