Transport is a public good that should be available to all. Good, affordable, accessible transport enables people to access jobs, education and training which can raise household income and can protect them from being pushed into poverty. That's why we back #BetterBuses and welcome @scotgov commitments on returning our buses to public control.

The 26 October 1986 was known as ‘D-Day’, when the disastrous policy of bus deregulation was imposed everywhere across England, Scotland and Wales, except London.

It caused chaos, by stripping control over vital bus services away from public bodies and handing it to private companies instead. Since then, we’ve lost millions of miles of routes, fares have risen well above inflation and most parts of the country have been left with an expensive, unreliable and fragmented bus system that does not meet communities’ needs.

But after 40 years of failure, the tide is finally turning against bus deregulation. New publicly-controlled systems are now in place – or soon will be over the next few years – in many parts of England and Wales.

Join our Better Buses National Conference Online Event to hear more about the grassroots campaigns which have led to this much needed policy change. We will learn more about the history of bus deregulation, the campaigners who fought against it at the time, and the devastating impact it has had on human rights.

There will be time for discussion in breakout rooms exploring the progress being made in different parts of the country, sharing skills and providing tips to help you get involved in the fight for Better Buses for all.

So grateful to Ellie for giving us a tour of the Get Glasgow Moving’s 10-year exhibition!

It was fantastic to catch up with the campaign amd discuss how we best reach a public transport system in public hands! 🚌

What’s the point in £2 buses if the buses don’t even turn up ..

The exhibition is open for one more day at @newglasgowsociety 9am-5pm, make sure to get down to see a real part pf Glasgow’s living history, and see how many times you can spot Patrick. 💚

An exhibition celebrating ten years of Get Glasgow Moving is currently taking place at New Glasgow Society.

This week I posted some of my photos from their events. And have taken the opportunity to review Ellie Harrison’s journey from artist to activist.

I also reshare a 2012 interview with Harrison I did for New Escapologist magazine.

📸✨ 10 YEARS OF GET GLASGOW MOVING! 🚌
A decade of campaigning, community, big wins, setbacks and the fight for a better public transport system in Glasgow. And now, some of my photographs are part of the story. 📸
It was brilliant to be at the opening of the Get Glasgow Moving 10th Anniversary Photography Exhibition at New Glasgow City.

Thank you to all the campaigners and cross-party politicians who have supported this campaign over the years and helped highlight just how important it is for Glasgow and the wider region to have a better, more reliable and accessible bus network.

From local people and activists coming together in September 2016 to a campaign that has grown into one of Scotland’s best-known passenger groups this exhibition captures a decade of people, places, campaigning and change.
📍 1307 Argyle Street, Glasgow, G3 8TL
📅 On display until 23 September
🕛 12pm–5pm
Come along, see the photographs, learn about the journey and celebrate the people who have kept Glasgow moving. 🚌📸
And yes… keep an eye out for my photographs!

Across Scotland, passengers are still dealing with inconsistent and unreliable bus services.

We need a bus network that works for the people who depend on it, with reliable services, proper investment and greater public control.

Gabriele from @living_rent explains why cheaper fares alone aren’t enough.

Ellie from Get Glasgow Moving spoke to the BBC on Wednesday about the new £2 fare cap set to hit Strathclyde from Monday.

Here’s why the £2 fare cap, whilst positive, isn’t a good use of public money in the current deregulated system.

We need public control of our buses now!
