Another beautiful night at the Innocence Project’s Free At Last gala ✨

So grateful to spend time with Rebecca Brown and Karen Newirth — two women who have dedicated so much of their lives to fighting for justice.

Rebecca helped lead policy reform efforts at the Innocence Project for nearly two decades, helping pass hundreds of criminal legal reform laws, and now continues that work through Maat Strategies. Karen has spent decades defending the accused and advocating for the wrongfully convicted.

Being surrounded by people doing this work at such a high level is always inspiring, and reconnecting with this community each year means everything.

Many women attribute this crisis at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility to Deputy Superintendent Blot — who has documented allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, racist attacks, and encouraging suicide at THREE prior correctional facilities.

He is now in charge of New York’s only women’s maximum-security prison.

Women’s History Month is a time to honor women’s strength and fight for their dignity.

But right now, at Bedford Hills — New York’s only women’s maximum security prison — women are being denied daily showers and forced to wash with buckets of water.

They are being locked in for hours with no recreation, no community space, no furniture to sit on.

They are afraid to file grievances because they face retaliation.

And three of them have died in four weeks.

This is not rehabilitation. This is punishment — and it is happening on @govkathyhochul watch.

Bedford Hills Correctional Facility is New York’s only maximum-security women’s prison.

The Department of Justice just ranked it #1 in the nation for reported sexual victimization among women’s prisons.

#1.

This is not a coincidence. This is what happens when leadership with a history of assault and abuse is placed in charge of the most vulnerable — and when no one acts on the warnings.

Families are waiting 5 hours just to visit. Women are being punished for filing complaints. And the state knew.

Tag @GovKathyHochul. Demand action.

Three women have died at Bedford Hills in roughly four weeks. Two of them by suicide.

Advocates warned the state months ago. Nothing changed.

Women inside report being denied daily showers and forced to clean themselves with buckets of water. They report staff violence. Retaliation. Mental health breakdowns. Collapsing morale. And no one has been held accountable.

Many attribute this crisis to the arrival of Deputy Superintendent Blot who comes to the only women’s prison in New York with documented allegations of sexual assault, physical abuse, racist attacks, and encouraging suicide at three prior facilities for men.

This is happening right now. And @GovKathyHochul has the power to stop it.

We are calling for:
→ The immediate removal of DS Blot
→ An independent investigation
→ Passage of the CARE Act

“I served 27 years, and during that time, I faced numerous amounts of abuse….a few days before Christmas I was beaten so bad I had to be hospitalized,–my tooth was chipped, my tongue was lacerated, my arms were twisted….as I stand here to support Robert Brooks and his family, I am also standing here to support the women that we don’t talk about.”

“Over 146 people died in New York State prisons last year. And approximately one third of them were 40 years or younger.”
