IC 342 - a nearly face-on spiral galaxy hidden behind the dense dust lanes of the Milky Way in the constellation Camelopardalis.

Often called the “Hidden Galaxy,” IC 342 lies close to the galactic plane, where foreground interstellar dust heavily obscures and reddens its light, making accurate measurements challenging. Despite this extinction, it is one of the brightest galaxies in the IC catalog and a major member of the IC 342/Maffei Group. The galaxy exhibits well-defined spiral arms rich in H II regions, indicating active star formation across its disk. Distance estimates vary due to foreground absorption, but current values place it at roughly 10-11 million light-years from Earth. Its nucleus shows signs of significant starburst activity rather than dominance by a powerful active galactic nucleus.
