Just because you can't see a brain injury doesn't mean you can't feel its impact. 💚

You can struggle to find the right words and still know exactly what you want to say.

You can have normal scans and still experience life-changing symptoms.

You can be diagnosed with a "mild" brain injury and face challenges that are anything but mild.

These are the invisible realities too many brain injury survivors live with every day.

In a recent episode of Rupture, Wendy Lurrie and speech-language pathologist Melissa Katz explore how the language we use, the assumptions we make, and the things we can't see can shape someone's entire recovery experience.

Because being told you're fine isn't the same as being fine.

What if “getting back to normal” isn’t the goal?

In our latest BrainStorm collaboration, Melissa Katz, MS, CCC-SLP of @beyondwordslc shares her perspective on aphasia, communication, and the pressure young stroke survivors face to “get back to normal.”

Because recovery isn’t always about going back. Sometimes, it’s about figuring out what you want life to look like now.

"I believe you. I'm going to work with you. I'm going to help you."

Melissa Katz on why she became a speech-language pathologist, and why it still drives her work with clients whose concussion doesn't show on a scan. They might still be working. They are not totally okay. And they need someone to believe them.

Expect A Bike was realized in 2016 in response to our friend Gabriela O’Shea being struck by a car on her bike. We came together as a community and @artistryancronin created the painting “Expect A Bike” as part of an event we organized to support her. Fast forward two years later and her father asked to use the visual on a lawn sign to mark the spot where Gaby was struck. Without hesitation we said yes. Little did we know, a public art and bike safety campaign would emerge taking on a life of its own.
Since 2018 we have partnered with our local police department, a law firm, private citizens, Bike MS, the YMCA, the Governor’s Traffic and Safety Commission, etc to offer the signs for free with one caveat, they must be public facing. The signs have made their way around the world, one sign at a time. The path keeps unfolding and we’re here for it.

Do you know of a connection or have an idea? We’re open to all conversations. Drop on in to our DMs. We can’t wait to hear from you.
