POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
LOST AND FOUND.

When Jonty asked me to lead his crew for TSP Solo late last year I said yes without hesitation (though after some consultation with a very understanding Mol!)

The ‘23 relay was incredible, and the chance to experience that anew while helping Jonty achieve an even bigger dream - no brainer.

But I flew to LA not knowing if I was actually up to the task. Since August last year, I’ve been back to battling with body and mind - first a stress reaction, then repeated illnesses leading to chronic fatigue and a big backslide on my mental health.

I came out here unsure of how I’d perform. Could I deal with the chaos and sleep deprivation? Would I be able to keep it together, make the right calls, keep the RV on the road? (Spoiler: no to that last one!)

What followed was a beautiful week of friendship and mutual support that renewed my spirit and helped me break through to a positive place mentally.

“Chippy chippy” was the motto this year - borrowed from the ’23 relay, but given new life as Riz, Luke, Adrian and I came together to focus on that singular goal of getting Jonty to Vegas safely.

It’s a call to focus on the here and now. The next stretch of road, the ice towels on arrival, the water bottles that need filling and gels that need packing. And with that focus, all the noise and pressure that so often feels unrelenting gradually melted away.

It helped that Jonty took every challenge the route and his own body threw at him in his stride.

There were dark moments of course, but never a raised voice, never a sense of defeat, never anything a quick nap, PBJ sandwich or shot of insulin couldn’t fix.

Seeing that resilience and perseverance up close, it’s a huge motivator - if Jonty wasn’t going to be the weak link, we damn sure weren’t going to be either. Everyone stepped up and played their part in making his run the success it was. No spectators indeed.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to have crewed this race again, and am so, so proud of Jonty for achieving something that no Type 1 diabetic has done before. He’s an inspiration to me and many others, and I hope his story gets the attention it deserves.

Until next time!
