PROJECT TITLE
Can Amor de la Isla

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Perched above the Mediterranean in the village of Banyalbufar, Can Amor de la Isla is the transformation of a traditional Mallorcan townhouse by Blanca Gardelegui and KOSMOS Architects. Guided by the constraints of its remote location, the renovation embraces an architecture of resourcefulness, where almost every element of the existing house was repaired, adapted, or given a new purpose.
Original floor tiles were recomposed into a large terrazzo surface, an old door was cut in half to become a folding one, and windows and façades were carefully restored rather than replaced. Throughout the house, overlooked objects were transformed into everyday features: ceramic roof tiles and oil funnels became lamps, a discarded cast-iron manhole cover became the base of the stove, and rebar caps were reimagined as door handles. Paint became the project's primary new material, radically transforming the interiors with minimal resource, while traditional Mediterranean chain curtains conceal the kitchen with understated elegance. The only significant addition is a simple pulley, installed to bring materials and supplies up through the narrow vertical house. Topped with a spherical light, it also becomes a small domestic lighthouse overlooking the sea.
The result is a warm and deeply local home that demonstrates how careful repair, craftsmanship, and imagination can create a contemporary interior with remarkably few new resources.

Transformation of an old Mallorcan townhouse in a village by the sea.

Due to its isolated location, the project relied on reusing as much as possible from the existing house, as well as from the local storage of leftovers of construction material. The existing tiles were recomposed as a large-scale terrazzo; existing door cut in half and reused as a folding one; windows and facades repaired. Oil funnels and ceramic rooftiles became lampshades; a discarded cast iron manhole cover became the base of the existing stove; and rebar caps were used as doorknobs. In the kitchen, traditional mediterranean chain curtains screen the otherwise exposed products and appliances. Paint was used as a minimum resource to recompose the space.
.
At the end the only addition really needed was a pulley to bring materials and supplies up the house.

@epflenac

Europan Suisse – Next Generation Workshop
On June 25th, Europan Suisse invited guests from across Swiss architecture, academia, public administration, and the media to the DISPO in Nidau. Together, we asked: How can Europan be anchored more sustainably in Switzerland? The day opened with a keynote by Frédéric Bonnet on urban development challenges across Europe, followed by a workshop moderated by Caspar Schärer, who set the stage for a rich and critical exchange. #europansuisse #nextgeneration #urbanfutures #architectureworkshop

Off-season pavilion in Logroño, an ephemeral “chapel” made of temporary borrowed wine storage boxes, is nominated to @archdaily building of the year 2025 award.

We would be grateful if you vote for it (link in bio), otherwise just happy to have an opportunity to share a nice photo of it by @laurianghinitoiu again

Together with friends we organized an AA Visting School in Mallorca dedicated to the local sandstone, called « el marés », construction from it and post-extractivism landscapes.

During this week together with students we followed all the extraction sequence of this unique natural material. We visited an old manually carved-out quarry, that reminded of a sunken Eden garden; a machine-cut quarry of a perfect square shape that could be a great underground football field. We looked at ancient 800-year old examples — such as the massive Palma Cathedral and at the recent ones that they are just finished — such as the social IBAVI housing by Estruch Martorell architects or a neovernacular villa by @munarq.es. We observed amazing details such as « cutout » stone corners in the city that allowed the carriages to pass, and 3 million year-old petrified corals inside the rock.

It is already the second @aavisiting_school workshop on the island dedicated to its most important resources we organized as @kosmos_architects together with @bggardelegui, @chch_live, @guillemaloy, @iiiiiiiiiisla and we are looking to make the next one soon.
