Monsters. Under the bed. In the house across the street. In the old stories. At the edges of the known world. “We Make Monsters” will sink its sharp, uneven teeth into the territory of monster-making. In an interactive, immersive theater experience, audiences will witness a series of transformations as what was hidden is revealed, the mask is removed, curtains are drawn to expose the unexpected. Watch for talons emerging from starched white cuffs. Listen for sounds from another world. Feel apprehension as you turn a corner. Enjoy the company of the monster in the seat next to you.

Devised and directed by Brian Shaw, Professor, School of Theatre and Dance.

See what inspired the monsters we made and prepare to step into their world… if you dare.

Because the future of theatre is built through generosity, mentorship, and legacy. ✨

Since its inception, the mission of the Sarah Siddons Society has been to support the next generation of theatre makers by funding scholarships for promising students at top Chicago-area universities, including Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University, Roosevelt University, Northwestern University, and Northern Illinois University.

This year’s honoree, Tony Award winner Beth Leavel, was celebrated for her extraordinary career on Broadway, most recently appearing in Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. Her acclaimed performances in The Prom, The Drowsy Chaperone, Bandstand, Mamma Mia!, Elf, and more have made her a beloved force in American musical theatre.

We are proud to share that Columbia’s 2025 Sarah Siddons Society Scholarship recipients are Antonia Butka, Grace Volpe, and Ethan Williams.

This upcoming Tuesday join us for ‘A Defiant Echo’, a multimedia play written and directed by Kyle Gregory Price. The premiere of this play will utilize Elastic Arts’ CLEAT sound system as well as multi-channel video. Britt Anderson, Richie Schiraldi, Kao, Surinder Martignetti, Gordon Fung and Justin Cavazos perform live with interspersed projections of Deirdre Harrison and Brian Shaw.

A young woman was cursed from on high by parents, by the gods, or perhaps an antiquated agenda. Eons of a forced inability to express herself leads to blurred judgement and a daily, quick-fix dosed out by a classic character we have all met. However, the realization of exploited love and the loss of a friend sparks a desire for change that most of us know is never easy. Our heroine’s journey begins pushing through detoxification of a mythic hex and upwards to an old home.

We’ll see you Tuesday 12/9 at 8pm!
