Marathi hip-hop has steadily built its own identity within India’s rapidly growing rap scene, with artists bringing regional language, local culture and the realities of Maharashtra into their music. The scene has produced a range of distinct voices, from the raw and street-oriented approach of Sambata and MC Gawthi to artists who have carried the influence of Maharashtra’s hip-hop culture into a much wider national audience.

Emiway Bantai and MC Stan are two of the biggest names connected to this movement. While neither artist is primarily known for making Marathi rap, both come from Maharashtra and have played a significant role in putting the state’s hip-hop culture on the national map. Emiway’s journey from Mumbai’s local scene to becoming one of Indian hip-hop’s most recognised independent artists, and MC Stan’s rise from Pune’s underground scene to mainstream recognition, represent two very different paths from the same broader regional culture.

Meanwhile, artists like Sambata and MC Gawthi continue to represent the Marathi side of the scene in their own ways, keeping the language and local identity closely connected to hip-hop. Together, these different sounds show how diverse Maharashtra’s rap ecosystem has become and how regional identity continues to shape Indian hip-hop.
