Some hunger can never be fed. This family found that out the hard way.

"In the Rotten Pits of Hunger" by Ajinkya Bhasme follows an affluent family driven into desperation when their youngest son dies by suicide on the exact same day a mysterious rot plagues their yielding farmlands. Hoping for relief, they call on an ancient entity tied to food and nourishment. What answers instead is not a blessing. It's something that remembers being hungry too. 🌾

What stuck with me was how the horror doubles as commentary — this isn't just a haunted-house story, it's about who gets to eat and who doesn't, wrapped in folk horror and psychological dread that doesn't let up. The deaths here are neither quick nor merciful.

If you want horror that's as much about greed, hunger and inequality as it is about ghosts, this delivers both.

The story is centered around Bhuva, who resides with his large family. However, their lives take a dark turn when his uncle vanishes and is later discovered dead. The following day, their crops wither away, and their world is turned upside down. In a desperate attempt to regain control, they invoke an entity to grant their wishes. Yet, Annamati only bestows blessings when her hunger is satiated, and failure to do so will have perilous consequences. Furthermore, they soon come to the realization that they have unintentionally summoned not only a deity but also a malevolent entity.

This story not just an ordinary horror but a bleak, unsettling exploration of physical hunger as a metaphor for emotional, social, and existential deprivation. The narrative doesn’t follow a conventional plot but it immerses the reader in a decaying mental and physical landscape where hunger becomes both a condition and a state of being. Hunger here is not just about food but it is about dignity, affection, purpose, and recognition which makes the novel deeply disturbing. This is not an easy read, but it is a powerful one. It leaves behind a lingering heaviness.
