As it’s #BlackHistoryMonth it would be remiss of me to not make reference to my #MartinLutherKing #linocut #print. One of the most iconic speeches ever made, Martin Luther King’s “#IHaveADream” speech was delivered on 28th August 1963. I started carving this Linocut to mark the 60th anniversary of these words being delivered by the Civil Rights Activist, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Slightly paraphrased to make it relevant to all, his actual words were, “I have a dream that (my four) little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Limited to just 80 editions you can still get your handmade copy here:

It's Black History Month 2026 and I'm honoured to be screening my short film about Frederick Douglass next Tuesday 27th October at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh as part of the Women in Film and TV Short Film Club. I'll be doing a Q&A and discussing exciting plans for a longer film. Link in Bio. 6.30pm. Celebrating Black History in our Community

We were devastated to hear about the awful experiences that the @blackboystheatreclub, @munyachawawa, and others from the beautiful cast of @chichesterft's 'Midsummer' faced on the streets of #Chichester.

Yesterday we wrote an email to Munya and The Black Boys' Theatre Club. After expressing sadness for the behaviour of our neighbours, we wrote:

All of us at #WemsFest are proud to try to make a positive change in Chichester and the local area by helping to run a community interest company - we are all volunteers - to try to bring some life into Chichester!

We do this musically - we deliver about 50 gigs a year in the Chichester area and we try to make them as culturally varied as possible.

We have a friend, Ebou Touray, who runs an organisation in Brighton called @africannightfever, and we partner with Ebou to bring African musicians to our audience on a regular basis - particularly in October (#BlackHistoryMonth).

Since WemsFest is a community interest company, any profits we make from bar & ticket sales are reinvested into the local community.

For the past 4 years we have chosen to put this money into subsidising musical workshops, with Black musicians, in local schools.

This means that over 1500 local students have had the chance to listen to, and often play music with, world-class musicians from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Caribbean, Cuba, and The Gambia.

We would LOVE to host your Black Boys Theatre Club at WemsFest (if you'd extend to music and not just theatre).

Please get in touch - YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME HERE.

Our second Black History Month-specific show is on Halloween - 31st October 8pm at The Old Malthouse (AKA Chidham Village Hall, PO18 8TP, about 10 minutes from central Chichester). We'll have Gambian kora maestro @surakora on, with his band, and then he'll be joined by Malian guitar virtuoso @koitehabib.

We expect all your students want to go trick or treating but there's still plenty of room in the audience if you wanted to come as our guest :)

Black History Month at St Andrew’s

This week, our History Lead, Mr Harrison, led a special assembly to celebrate Black History Month and this year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities. We explored the achievements and contributions of inspiring Black individuals and the positive impact they have made on our world, both locally and worldwide.

🏡 Black History Month Homework

Children are invited to choose ONE creative homework challenge to celebrate Black history, culture, community and achievement. Options include researching a Black history hero, creating a changemaker comic strip, sharing a family recipe, designing a commemorative stamp or making a mini-museum in a shoebox. (See email for more details).

Please use materials you already have at home – there is no need to buy anything!

We look forward to seeing the children’s fantastic creations! 🌟

Find out more about Josephe LaRoche's youngest daughter Louise. Unfortunately not a lot of Juliette, Simone's and Louise's lives are very well known but I wanted to highlight what she has done for Titanic's history in later years.

It also must have been so emotional to set foot on the Nomadic again in 1995!

This is my last Titanic related BHM post. I have one more BHM post before I move onto Halloween!

#Glocal - Part 2 of Afrikan #Reparations Ourstory and History. We need the former to debunk and destroy the latter! We also explore Afrikan Reparations #Literacy as with Sis Reverend @mzxosei and raise critical questions about the changing nature of the movement from the 1990s having covered previous centuries in part 1 last week.
