♠️ Join us for the Artist Reception of Bonnie Hopper's A Royal Flush in a Full House — a striking solo show reimagining a deck of cards through an Art Nouveau lens.

Hopper transforms revolutionary and historical African American figures into full-size, stylized portraits, reframing their histories and elevating them to the status they deserve: royalty. Bold color, intricate detail, and a whole lot of history, told one card at a time.

Come meet the artist, hear the stories behind the deck, and see the work up close.

📍 Gallery 110, Pioneer Square, Seattle
🗓️ Artist Reception: Saturday, Sept 5 | 2–5 PM
🎟️ Free & open to all

Social Media Takeover Day 4! I'm sharing a few more more of my works.

Image 1: Fractured Bloom: Large scale Collage, Mixed Medium: Oil, African Fabric on Hardboard, 48x36x1-1/2", 2021
This painting depicts a woman of color, her gaze steady and soulful, framed by an explosion of oversized peonies in shades of cream, blush, and deep burgundy. The composition creates a powerful juxtaposition between the external beauty of the flowers and the internal fragility of the subject.
The most compelling features of the work include:
• The Kintsugi Effect: Her face and neck are marked by delicate, spiderweb-like cracks, reminiscent of repaired porcelain. This suggests a history of being "broken" and then mended, signifying resilience and strength rather than just damage.
• The Single Tear: A solitary tear tracks down her left cheek, adding a layer of quiet, lived-in sorrow that contrasts with the vibrant, healthy life of the surrounding flora.

Image 2: If Trees Could Talk, Mixed Medium/Large Scale Collage:Oil on Hardboard, 48x36x1", 2021
The title, "If Trees Could Talk," invites the viewer to consider the history that trees—silent observers of the natural world—might hold. By embedding skulls within the trunk, the artist creates a chilling visual metaphor for ancestral memory, history, and the trauma of the past.
The man in the foreground acts as a bridge between the present and this history. His watchful, sideways gaze suggests he is acutely aware of the stories embedded in the world behind him—stories of loss, death, and endurance. The painting serves as a somber meditation on the idea that the land and nature are permanent repositories for the histories of those who came before us, and that these ghosts are never truly gone, but rather woven into the fabric of the environment itself.

Social Media Takeover Day 3!

I'm excited to share more of my work in today's post.

Image 1: Past is Prologue Large Scale Collage , 48x36x1", Oil on canvas w/mosaic tiles, 2026
True to its title, Past is Prologue, the painting establishes a narrative continuum. By placing contemporary-feeling figures alongside historical signifiers—protest imagery, traditional textiles, and foundational documents—the artwork visually argues that history is actively shaping, supporting, and setting the stage for the modern Black Movement

Image 2: The Gilded Restoration, 48x36x1", Oil on canvas , 2026
In this portrait I’ve blended Art Nouveau elegance with Ancient Egyptian symbolism, capturing a figure that exists between the timelessness of a relic and the vitality of a living soul. The Subject: A woman of serene and powerful presence is depicted with deep, earthen skin tones that bear a network of delicate cracks, reminiscent of aged Kintsugi or ancient ceramic.

Image 3: Foxy Pops (Memories of the Corner Store), Oil on Canvas, 48x36x1-1/2", 2026
In this work, I wanted to capture the weighted stillness of youth. The subject stands at a crossroads of sensory overload—the loud patterns of his shirt, the jagged history of the graffiti behind him, and the commercial glow of vintage advertisements. By placing the 'Foxy Pops' at the center, I’m exploring how the simple, sugary markers of childhood act as both a shield and a bridge to the adult world. His gaze isn't just looking at the viewer; it’s holding its ground against the noise of the city.

Day 2 of my SOLA Awardee Takeover

I've been incredibly fortunate to have a family that has always supported my art. Their encouragement has meant more to me than I can say, and I'm truly grateful for the love and belief they've shown in my work over the years.

In fact, three of my brothers have purchased my artwork, and it always brings me joy to know those pieces are still displayed and continue to receive so many compliments.

The artwork the end of this carousel is especially meaningful to me. My sister, Jo Ann, purchased this piece, and that simple act of support helped jump-start my return to making art. I'll always be profoundly grateful to her for believing in me and reminding me that my work mattered.

Welcome to my SOLA Awardee Takeover!

Hello! I'm Bonnie Hopper, and I'm honored to be one of the 2026 SOLA Awardees.

I'm a Seattle-based mixed media artist, and my work brings together oil paint, collage, and resin to explore African American history, the influence of jazz, and the memories of growing up in a family of thirteen. Every piece I create is layered with stories, texture, and color—connecting personal experiences with broader cultural narratives.

Throughout this week, I'm excited to share my artwork, my creative process, and some of the inspirations that have shaped my journey as an artist. Today's carousel offers a glimpse into my work.
