It’s been reported in the media that great friend of mine Steve Nickson is about to be appointed Sporting Director at @wrexham_afc

Nicko and I go way back, 25 years in fact when we both joined @rovers. Over the years we’ve shared many a trip abroad to explore how the very best organisations operate- learning and striving to improve is just one of Nicko’s greatest attributes.

Some of Nicko’s qualities include,

-An incredible work ethic (more on this later)
-Negotiation skills, deals for the likes of,
-@alex_isak, @sandrotonali & @anthonygordon to name a few are complex & complicated.
- A growth mindset, openness to challenge his beliefs. In knowing & working with Nicko he is solution focused, can move on quickly, does not sit in the emotion. He accepts where you are & looks for opportunities that often are not seen by others.
- People person, he cares, he connects, is emotionally intelligent and has a natural ability to make you laugh.
- His Industry knowledge is simply second to none
- Experience and wisdom. This is something you have to live. He has.
- Importantly and I’m sure he’ll thank me for this at some point the media constantly get his age wrong.
He’s 52 not 61!

But this is Nicko’s personality, no exaggerated ego, he keeps under the radar so I assume he’s not corrected the media as yet so here it is

So let me tell you about his work ethic……

Nicko graduated through our VSI Executive Education MSc in Sports Directorship course in 2019. During one session he came to me and said…..

“I need to leave early today as I have a flight at 5:30pm to Paris for a midnight meeting”

Sure I said, see you next block of days next month…

Nicko replied saying “No, I’ll be back for the session tomorrow morning” I thought he was joking.

The following morning I arrived back at the University at 9am only to find Nicko sat there, he was the first person back in the auditorium ready to go.

Hard work doesn’t guarantee success but being work shy definitely makes success harder to achieve

If the rumours are correct I wish you well mate, Wrexham AFC have made a great signing in appointing their first ever Sporting Director.

This is going to be interesting and in many ways groundbreaking.

A planning session took place today on the VSI Executive Education MSc in Sports Directorship course lead by Dr. Nick Halafihi

In collaboration with @teamworks
VSI will be leading a research project looking at the use of data driven decision making, how it’s used in the transfer market and its implications on club finances.

We start in the The Premier League and will be delivering our initial findings at our ‘Transfer Window’ masterclass with Teamworks in July.
