Collaboration plays an increasingly important role in contemporary curatorial practice. The strongest partnerships are not built around visibility alone but around shared ideas, mutual respect, and long-term exchange. Whether working with artists, institutions, writers, or communities, curators help create environments where different perspectives can come together and generate new ways of thinking. This July series explores how meaningful collaboration contributes to the development of exhibitions and cultural projects.

What happens when an exhibition chooses to live with uncertainty instead of resolving it?

The 3rd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, curated by René Block, explored coexistence through difference. Bringing together diverse artistic voices, the exhibition created space for dialogue without demanding consensus.

Set against a period of geopolitical uncertainty, it reflected on how art can hold complexity, contradiction, and possibility at once.

The present is where uncertainty and possibility meet.

What shapes the futures we imagine?

All the World’s Futures, the 56th Venice Biennale, curated by Okwui Enwezor, focused on the realities of capital, labor, and inequality shaping the present.

Across Venice, artists responded to urgent political and economic conditions, while the Arena platform brought live readings of Das Kapital into the exhibition space.

The Biennale positioned art as a way to confront systems that define everyday life.

The present is where every future begins.

What if nature is not something we observe, but something we are part of?

The inaugural Helsinki Biennial, titled The Same Sea and curated by Pirkko Siitari, explored the idea of interconnected ecosystems where human and non-human life coexist within shared environments.

Set across Vallisaari Island and locations in Helsinki, the Biennial brought together over 40 artists and collectives whose works engaged with ecology, climate change, and coexistence. The exhibition invited audiences to encounter art within living landscapes, where the boundaries between nature and culture begin to dissolve.

Rather than treating nature as a backdrop, the Biennial positioned it as an active participant in shaping experience and meaning.

We are not separate from these systems. We move within them.

Every curator knows the pain of the Editing Wall — the moment where narrative wins over individual brilliance.
Hans Ulrich Obrist’s legendary exhibition do it (1993–ongoing) is built entirely on this principle.
Each version of the show changes depending on which instructions the curator includes — and which ones they leave out.
Editing isn’t a secondary task in curatorial practice. It is the practice.

What’s the toughest piece you’ve ever had to leave out?
Or the work you can’t imagine curating without?

നഞ്ചിയമ്മ 🔥💪🏾 Biennale series -2
Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025 .Stay tuned ❤️

Nanjiamma’s voice carries the memory of the land, the forests, and the lives of the Irula people. These songs are not performances but living histories—shaped by labor, struggle, joy, and resilience. Every note echoes generations of wisdom, reminding us that folk music is not just something we listen to, but something we inherit, preserve, and feel deeply

Art knows no borders—and neither should our ways of seeing it.

This piece explores how curators today are rewriting exhibition playbooks to embrace global perspectives, challenge the familiar, and invite every visitor into the story.

From redefining the stage to rethinking the script, it’s time the world’s art became truly worldwide.

A Biennale is an international art exhibition held every two years, bringing together artists from around the world.

Bukhara became its home because it is one of the most ancient cultural centers of Central Asia - a city of craftsmanship, Sufi philosophy, music, patterns, ceramics, and unique architecture. Here, the past and the present meet naturally, making it the perfect place for a dialogue between heritage and contemporary art.

The uniqueness of the Bukhara Biennale lies in the fact that installations are created directly inside historical buildings madrasas, caravanserais, narrow streets, and inner courtyards.
The city’s ancient structures become part of the artworks, and the artworks become part of the city.

It’s not just an exhibition the entire city breathes with art.

The 2022–23 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, curated by Shubigi Rao, embraced the power of storytelling as preservation. Instead of traditional white-walled galleries, the show unfolded across Kochi’s decaying colonial warehouses and spice markets — spaces heavy with memory. Rao invited artists who work with archives, oral histories, and ecological narratives, turning curation into an act of survival.

The Biennale’s very structure blurred the line between exhibition and lived experience.
It wasn’t only about showing art; it was about sustaining stories that history forgets- languages fading, communities displaced, and archives lost.

Kochi asked us to see the curator not as an organizer of objects, but as a keeper of vanishing voices.

@sbardaouil and @till.fellrath have seen my review about their film exhibition in Busan 10 years ago and now my films in their exhibitions. I’m stunned by how a decade-long friendship unfolds and how it can generate so many more relationships like growing roots of Banyan trees in Taipei. Thank you, boys, and gānbēi for another decade 🧚🏼✨💕🫰🏼
